They've just had a liver specialist on LBC and it was incredible listening to him reel off the health benefits of abstinence.
You don't need to be a liver specialist to know that. If you are doing something that is harmful to your body, then stop doing it, then it will of course be beneficial. |

After a lifetime of seriously heavy drinking I've recently, last three or four months, have had my liver tested in several ways. The final report from the specialist was and I quote:
"I did explain that alcohol can have other harmful effects such as heart disease, cancer and obviously social and domestic issues. However from a liver point of view it is unlikely that you will ever come to harm from your alcohol". |

That was the final sentence of the report not the full report.

One thing the specialist said to me but wasn't in his written report was that liver disease, and alcohol resistance to it, may be genetic and I may have got lucky in that respect.

''According to the American Liver Foundation, between 10 and 20 percent of heavy drinkers will develop cirrhosis.''
I've known plenty of heavy drinkers, some are still alive but not one has or was diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver. Not so the ladies, two have died from it. Heart disease is far more common in the men, along with cancer. |

It's also important to remember the impact on mental health and consequential effects such as accidents, violence, stupid decision making...
