Much of the focus (pun intended) is on the filming. It appears to be one continuous take.

Whilst that's rare and impressive, it means there's no character development in the beginning, middle or later in the film. I think that's a shame.

The camera follows the hazardous jouney of 2 men to their destination.

The futility of war and especially THAT war comes across. On the Imax the scenes and scenery are hugely impressive.

Overrall I found it tense but in some ways boring too. Predictable. Inevitable with no real shocks or twists.

Could have been so much better. The battle that was trying to be avoided could have been developed far more, including from a German perspective. But because it was filmed as a single shot that couldn't really happen.

Could say a lot more but don't want to include spoilers...

Seen it Today and it was good but could have been a lot better, not a Classic in a Million Years but worth a watch.6 maybe 7 out of 10.

certainly decent and impressive cinematography not the story i hoped for tho

feel they went too much for style , and substance/story lacks a lot

hacksaw ridge... now that's a story

So the joker is better ?
Report hello :-) January 19, 2020 10:36 PM GMT
i was far more immersed in the joker

i thought it would be fav for best picture tbh , incredible performance possibly one of best ive seen

cant knock mendes style and it is a decent film , i just expected more really given the hype

its art tho , subjective
Report RLKingPunter January 19, 2020 11:02 PM GMT
Thought it was very similar to Warhorse, a bit disappointed tbh with all the hype 7/10, not a patch on The Joker
Report lux January 20, 2020 12:19 AM GMT
I thought it was ok, on one level I enjoyed the straightforward simplicity of it but at the same time felt the opportunity was missed to really get in there and have a good ol' existential ponce about and root around 'a la Apocalypse Now or Thin Red Line etc...

6/10
Report therhino January 20, 2020 9:48 AM GMT
Very much enjoyed it - 8/10. For me very reminiscent of Peter Weir's Gallipoli, but with a far more polished, Dunkirk-like feel. Highly recommended.

I saw this last week, a bit like other reviews here, not as good as I had been expecting, the 'one shot' style limits the films scope, the acting isn't great and the plot is rather skinny. It does look great though and gives a good idea of what it must of been like out trenches/no mans land. I have it down as a cross between 'Apocalypto' and 'The road', not as good as either, and I wouldn't pay to see it again, it's not terrible though. 6.5/10. Sam Mendes is no Christopher Nolan IMO.
Report roadrunner46 January 20, 2020 5:53 PM GMT
warhorse was 10 times better than 1917, watchable 6/10

Short fav for best Oscar picture

Nah!!!

It lacked something but had what seemed gritty reality in places, thought the walk through the trenches at the beginning was brilliantly done & seemed very realistic to conditions at the time.

6.5/10 from me.
The ten minutes spent with the woman and baby was totally irrelevant to the rest of the film and could have been cut.

If you want to see a proper film watch The Nightingale

quite brutal but one you wont forget in a hurry

i seen it on BFI player

Load of Bolox really - all they did is copy Yodel's business model.

Been to see it tonight and would echo other posts, 6.5/10
Thought Gallipoli and Birdsong were better films of the genre.

I saw it today after Cheltenham had finished in the excellent new West Norwood Picture House.

I was actually really looking forward to it, well I can only say how I honestly felt about the film in my view, which is this...

What an absolute croc of sheizen. So a German fighter plane gets winged and somehow lands on wheels and crashes into a barn yet somehow doesn't explode but is on fire. One of the "messengers" decides to get the German pilot some water and try and help him and his oppo gets stabbed in the liver by the pilot for his troubles and soon bleeds to death, yeah right, like that would really have happened.

I kept looking at my watch to see just how much longer I would have to endure this inane nonsense.
I do enjoy a good film but this certainly wasn't one of them. I would not see that film again if you paid me, it was way beyond diabolical.

I'm giving it a 2/10 score and that is me being generous, it's truly Goddam awful beyond words.

I think Black adder was closer - especially the ground they made in the last assault -  a yard long piece of turf on melchett's desk as proof

Jeremy Clarkson in the Sun yesterday:

I saw the movie Joker this week. Two hours of left-wing twaddle.

If that's true, must be nailed on for the main Oscar.

It's the Acting by Joaquin Phoenix that does it for me probably one of the pest performances I have ever seen.
Report moisok January 26, 2020 7:11 PM GMT
yeah    nah     you nearly had me   -  No   Black Adder gets closer

This clip is stunning, i cannot see Joaquim Phoenix at all in this clip. Best bit of acting in a long time.

I've now seen 1917, Joker, Jojo Rabbit, Once Upon a Time in H and The Irishman among the nominees and I find it hard to choose a winner. They are all good movies but imo not a classic among them.
If I have a bet on best picture it would be to lay 1917. Around !!/8 the rest of the field looks the value to me.
Report doridoru January 30, 2020 1:47 PM GMT
Dunkirk was terrible with an atrocious intrusive score by Hans Zimmer, surely 1917 is better?
Report UBLE/REGY January 30, 2020 3:11 PM GMT
A large number of our young men died in the trenches of France..

They bravely did their duty

The whole thing was sadly undone by the appalling unjust and vindictive Treaty of Versailles, heaping all the cost of and blame
for the war on Germany

So we had to fight them again 21 years later.

We should not blame the lower ranked Officers who took appalling casualties

The senior Officers, never able to cope with technology of this war

Won't be seeing it.
The usual OTT Hollywood hype.
Clips I saw portrayed a too ' clean cut' imagery.

Watched it last night and have to agree with OP. At the end of the film it felt like everyone was thinking ‘is that it?’

Bits of Warhorse, Saving Private Ryan, Gallipoli and a 100 other war films thrown in. Once again the German solider cannot shoot straight for toffee but the British solider hits the bullseye with almost every shot. Only unpredictable thing was the guy getting bayoneted I thought was going to be the main character, I was wrong.

All in all worth a watch to fill some spare time but no more. 5/10.

Not my kind of film but..does it question the justification for WWI ?

Franz Ferdinand?

I quite enjoyed it. Thought the plane scene was really good till slippy said it was rubbish. So thought I better shut up. Happy
