the times critic gave it full support - a slightly indulgent view but with diverse indicators,
allying to a hint of gallic or european influence without blotting out the essential englishness of the concept.

the overview of an east coast small port is so quintessentially english yet equidistantly through its long relation with foreign trade giving it a hint or overlay of continental or maybe even early american colonial influence

especially in the influence of language as spoken in those days

a fascinating project of the inter continental genre

You're not as stupid as you pretend to be, mo.
The proximity to the Canadian border and thus on UK influence intrigued me - the accents were done well - but I really felt I was in Bruce Springsteen country (if that makes sense).
I think it a brilliant film, and recommend it to the forum.

Well, I wouldn't go that high, but definitely worth 2 hours of your time.
It will make you cry, or as near to crying as you can get at your time of life.

buscuit tin

the analysis of a product which uses so many old heart stringing analogies, coupled with the attempt to link accent with events to certain regions (ie the one  one may speak now or to aspire to)  is an age long tactic to hook one's audience'

In crude speak - get the t!ts out and you will get attention.

There are many hooks to get one's audience to take the bait.
This could be anything from XR or Johnson(and the failings of the grey  labour party) to advertising anything you can think of.

May I say the brighter the better for attraction - I believe birds do it.

Or go the darker route and build up the anticipation of complete horror with black edifices or lots of bodies.

In bait terms why do you think fly fishers take so much time making their lures immaculate.  Etc etc

Or is one just pontificating publicly and showing off ho hio

whereas my favourite publication (the guardian) would ATTEMPT or pretend to take the intellectual route.

More importantly, as with jane austen (and every other author)  - did the guy get the girl or the girl get the guy

one wonders at austen  who was never married nor her sister

a most entertaining and perplexing conundrum.

I made a counterintuitive,  if I can say that, comment about madison county  which is frankly one of the most unrelieved  repetitious very tedious dialogue featuring two people.

Who wants to watch, let alone, listen to two people going through a period of their little lives and the subsequent dialogue.

But it is quaint and beautiful in its own mundane right.

How many of us have been there in our own reality.
Whether someone should make a movie about it is a moot point.

I really enjoyed it.  Not as bleak as I expected.

I really liked it - sure it has flaws but I don't really want to look for them. Just went with it from start to finish

I also found it dull, but very surprised 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 44% 5-star on Amazon reviews, maybe missed something and need to watch it again (?) The film just didn't seem to come together and like it was going nowhere, slow moving and very boring. But after reading these comments I will watch it again, still got the DVD.
