Everyone misses the point with this. Any amount of punishment, sanction or calling out, doesn't alter the mindset of somebody who would otherwise behave in a racist way. If a guy is sat in the stands, just containing what would otherwise manifest itself but for the threat of an eviction, a ban or a points deduction for his team, he's still THINKING what he thinks. I don't refrain from burgling houses just because I think I might get caught. Unless hearts and minds are changed permanently, football - and society still has the problem. The government threatening football authorities with "further action" is papering over the rather ugly crack, -  a breakdown of decency and tolerence.

You know we didn't have a racism problem a few decades ago. It's funny that the people who shout loudest about racism are the type that cause it in the first place.

Sami and Tashan had some things in common..they were young men, football fans and were brutally murdered by 2 and in Sami's case multiple people.

Tashan was a full time athlete. On the morning of his death he took his grandpa to his day care centre . He then headed off to see Arsenal play Forest in a Cup match. He was stabbed at a you tube station...

Sami was studying law. He was 18. He was coming home from a West Ham match. 9 men were arrested for his death but as far as I know, no charges have been made.

Both youngsters were black/brown. Their killers black/brown. Has ANYONE in the FA, Govt, or the patronising ex pro brigade said ANYTHING?

When blacks kill blacks NOONE cares except the families. The liberal filth that includes Stormzi, Neville, Lineker, Sky and BBC  ONLY care when a white lad shouts abuse at a black player.

They NEVER speak or so anything about black lads at football getting murdered. So who are the racists? Who really cares for these young lads?

Football HAS a racism problem. If Sami and Tashan were killed by whites  we would never hear the last of it. Because they were slaughtered by blacks we hear nothing.

I'd agree with steerforth, only difference now is that racists have been emboldened to spout their views. A few years ago, they might have thought the same but just been a lot more careful with actually saying it.

I reckon social media has a lot to answer for as there is courage in perceived anonymity (as seen on here) and it's translating to large crowds, but the simple truth is that there are now people in high power and all over our mainstream media who openly and proudly spout views which would never have seen the light of day a while back.

We're living in an age where racists see other prominent racists go unpunished and feel they can have a right good go at it too.

I still don't think I'm getting through here. It's not about punishing. Punishing doesn't change life long prejudice. That remains after the punishment - in fact, it may even be reinforced through a misplaced sense of indignation. The answer is changing mindsets, that is a huge challenge I admit - but without it, everything carries on as it always has been, whether or not it's suppressed.

If certain sections of society are responsible for a hugely disproportionate amount of violence, crime and general discord, other people are bound to feel prejudiced towards them I would think. I don't think racism is the correct term these days.

saddo - I totally get that - and I'm not saying for one minute that that is inherently irrational. But I live in Norfolk. I would take some offence if someone sugested in all seriousness that I'm attracted to my sister. Note that it's the "seriousness" that would count in that scenario: (joking about it would be much less of a worry to me, although not all would accept that). A mindset that really believes that every single person who shares a common origin or other physical trait, which is unrelated to a person's objective individual character, necessarily must possess an otherwise statistically significant character flaw, IS irrational. And it is a type of prejudice of which racicism is a subset. Education could remove that tendency but it might not remove the underlying natural dicomfort that a person might feel when the brain computes that a person with the unrelated common characteristic, might be a threat. That is human nature, but being self aware is to understand the process, and is the pathway to rising abobve it.

if black supporters actually went to watch games at stadiums, maybe that would help .. in one of my locals .. the landlord now charges  a fiver to strangers who pop in to watch a tv game …its mainly black lads who walk in with a can of coke and spend fcuk all … usually arsenal games... they don't come in no more... tight @rses

If you asked most people, a public enquiry into cheating in sport would be more welcome.

The fans pay good money to enjoy themselves at the football.
The footballers are paid damn good money to entertain the fans.

As far as I know Mikel obi continued to play  for Chelsea in the following years , and no one at the club faced any sanction for the false allegations of racism

he ( mikel) did get banned for threats to clattenburg based on the allegation of ramerez.

So no player , and no one at the club suffered or faced any sanction
For the false allegations of racism that could have destroyed Clattenburg career , and caused great stress to himself and his family ,and could have had untold consequences for his life beyond that

One reason is teams get players from all over the world now....so their own teams are going to be very mixed race

Supporters don't slag their own players, so I doubt it exits in this country now.
