Stormzy has said Britain is “definitely, 100%” racist and that this has worsened under Boris Johnson because his comments have emboldened people with racist views.
The grime artist, who has just released his second album, Heavy is the Head, made the comments in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. When asked if Britain was still racist, the musician said “definitely, 100%” even if it was “hidden”.
“It’s like: ‘Oh no, we’re not racist’. But there’s a lot of racism in the country,” he said. “The difficult thing with the UK is, as you said, in Italy it’s a clear problem, whereas trying to explain that Britain is a racist country [to a British person] is the most difficult thing ever. They think: ‘No, it’s not. Stormzy you’re successful. Look at London, there’s loads of black people …’ It’s a more difficult case to fight.”
Stormzy said the prime minister was a “figurehead” whose actions had made it more acceptable to say racist things in British society.
“If the top person can openly say this racist thing – the ‘piccaninnies’ remarks, ‘watermelon smiles’, comparing Muslim women to a letter box – if that is our figurehead, the top man, the leader we have to follow, and he openly says these things, he encourages hate among others.” He said since Johnson had been in office the situation had deteriorated, with people who hold racist views feeling emboldened to express them in public. “Before, people had to hide their racism. If you felt something bad about about black people, about Muslims, you had to shut up. Now these people have the confidence to come out in public to say everything. This is scary to me, that scares the sh*t out of me.”
Stormzy, whose real name Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo, said he would have to carefully consider whether or not he would accept an honour, such as an MBE or OBE, if offered one. He said it would be difficult to accept an honour “because of the British empire”, but that his mother would be proud if he was offered one. “It’s got a very dark history. You know, Britain colonised everywhere. It’s something I’d look into and decide in case of.”
During his headline Glastonbury set in June, Stormzy wore a stab vest with a union flag on it, designed by Banksy. As he performed the words “knife crime” appeared lit up behind him, and there was an excerpt from a speech by the Labour MP David Lammy on the issue. Lammy tweeted that Stormzy had used the performance to “speak out about the injustice of young black kids being criminalised”

With due respect to Stormzy (I do not know who he is but for header) I'd like to think I'm better read and have lived longer and possessed more experience in life and work than him, if the music industry is what he excels in (only). As such, his opinions are his own similarly mine - we'll agree to disagree, if so. However, if he wants a debate I'm more than willing.
I'm afraid the country that does the most to encourage a multicultural society as well as lauded for its welfare responsibility towards its less able or disadvantaged citizens is also more likely to be taken advantage of, and hospitality abused. Otherwise why are foreign nationals risk their lives trying to enter the country illegally? Why not to Germany, France, any other EU country or the USA, Japan, Singapore, China, etc? Could anyone name me one country in the world that offers free health care, free movement, free speech, unemployment benefit, subsidised housing, state pension, etc, to the less able, disadvantaged and unemployed? And, until recently The UK had one of the most amenable immigration policy in the world, I firmly believe. |

Sorry but you can't possibly be more hospitable than Germany. And arguably even France. I know you want to think that way but you are not. And your question is invalid because more illegal migrants come to Germany than UK. You also need to consider that having a shet border force who can't even stop inflated boats from entering the country does not translate to a hospitable population. You take in more migrants because you can't stop them from coming. Yes a lot of people prefer UK over Germany and France but there are very good reasons for that. Language, a well established black economy, colonial history helping in long term settlement etc. Nothing to do with hospitality. Though you have every right to assume that if it makes you feel good. |

Strange, is it not, after taking all factors into consideration more illegal immigrants still choose to cross the channel to come to The UK. It cannot be just the language or reasons postulated as some entrenched here (legals and illegals) still prefer not to speak English. I think it is because the UK authorities are less stringent and/or willing to carry out status verification eg immigration checks when stopped (vehicle/etc), at work, a situation, accessing free health or benefit, etc?
I believe as they are more immigrants in The UK (legals and illegals) it is much easier to blend in without arousing speculation/suspicion from authorities. |

I believe in a zero tolerance approach to illegal immigration. It's in no one's interests. Often the immigrants get scammed and abused. We have a natural defence as we are an island. If we are going to be economically poorer by leaving the EU, at least let's ensure we have the main benefit, which is a less crowded country and lower demand for limited housing.

He's after cheap publicity to promote his new album, and it looks like he's got it.
It might even get him on Question Time with the BBC. I'd be surprised if his comments were spontaneous, far more likely to be well prepared for maximum impact. |

I'm all for political immigrants (not economic) esp the very young ones - it's no fault of their own - from war-torn countries or repression; pure economic ones ought to be turned away or expel immediately and consideration only commence post this thro' the proper channel and criteria.
Maybe adopt a system that is presently operating in Australia eg send illegal immigrants to another island (nearby) whilst their immigration status are being processed. Maybe 'Stormzy' could consider relocating (assuming The UK is his official place of abode) to Venezuela, Russia, China, Germany, France or even Brazil or anywhere less "racist" in his opinion. I'm sure most of us would welcome his decision. |
