Gary Neville has blasted Boris Johnson for fuelling racism with his rhetoric on immigration. Speaking after abuse was allegedly directed at Manchester United footballers, Mr Neville called racism a "societal problem" that exists beyond the sport.
The pundit said on Saturday: "You're watching the prime minister's debate last night where the prime minister's talking about migration to this country and people coming into this country and havng to have a certain level."
He said: "It fuels it [racism] all the time".
Mr Neville spoke after a football fan was caught on camera reportedly making a monkey gesture towards two footballers during a derby, according to footage shared on social media. The former Manchester United footballer also said he believes racism has "got worse" across the country over the past three years.
Jeremy Corbyn praised Mr Neville, calling it a "powerful statement" which "condemn[ed] Boris Johnson's shameful record of fuelling racism".

Maya Goodfellow, author of Hostile Environment: How Immigrants Became Scapegoats, said: "Gary Neville calling out Boris Johnson for fuelling anti-immigration politics, which is *exactly* what the Tories are doing today with their immigration plans."

You really have to question the mentality of the electorate at this stage.
How on earth can they suffer 10 years of toryscum austerity and still be willing to vote for them?

We are living in a much more competitive and vicious world than I remember in the 1960's and 1970's
We have created this ourselves...we shall just have to work though it

It's his kind of attitude that we can't have a grown up conversation about immigration levels over the last 20 years that has resulted in the polarising of politics.

Good on Gary Neviile for calling out the racists. Here are more of his thoughts on immigration.
"We have reached a tipping point. You have Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid and Lionel Messi at Barcelona but in the Spanish league 63 per cent of their players are still Spanish. That sounds about right. We've gone too far in England. We're maybe 20 per cent off. We need to give chances to our own."

There will always be racism. You can never get rid of it 100%. Instead, people should acknowledge how football has helped to reduce racism. People are used to seeing blacks and foreigners from many different countries playing for their clubs.

I'd like to ask Mr Gary Neville if he'd asked other minority groups of the dominance of one minority group in a town, politics, living in clusters and refuses to integrate, chooses to communicate in their own language at work too, accuses others of Islamophobia, etc. Does Mr Gary Neville live in an area where the influx of immigrants is dominant? Probably not, maybe in an exclusive area mainly for the very rich of white demographic.
How could he equate racism in football (only a sport) to racism in general? But, for commercialisation ie the large sums of money involved racism in football would have been eradicated ages ago eg ban every football fan for life if found guilty of racism in the ground. If FIFA had the gumption to do it - they did next to nothing post the racial abuse of the England players in Bulgaria - why? The football paymasters are predominantly of a lighter complexion.
Maybe the subscribers to football channels in The UK could contemplate terminating their subscription to Sky, BT, etc ie vote with their feet. Until then little or nothing will be done.

I know for a fact johnson was right behind the fans abusing them - nevile was right OR he may have fkd up completely by getting involved and making wild accusations - a bit of a plonker getting carried away whilst winning etc etc yawn
there will be millions who remember him sticking his oar in when it wasn't needed and his timing was very questionable like jumping on the band waggon and door bolt horse lock etc

I use to like Neville, but these sorts of comments show him up to be the hypocritical fool he is.. put neville in a terraced house in Bradford and see if he changes his views instead of a detached house away from it all living in a leafy utopia. As usual with Neville/Linekar they rarely practise what they preach, if they did they would be allowing a few poor souls fleeing war torn countries in terror and poverty clutching their smart phones to make their way to one of their numerous houses.
