How does Uber determine if the guy driving the car is the same as the one they verified on the app? Its very difficult to do that isn't it? Of course the passenger could refuse to board the taxi if he things the driver isn't the same as in his app but how any are actually going to do it?

they can carry on whilst they appeal, an appeal which they will likely win despite chief magistrate emma arbuthnot (whose husband is involved with a firm that has close connections to uber) no longer being able to travel the country and find in their favour when they end up in court.

did the 12,000 drivers found to have invalid disclosure barring service checks have to carry out new checks? no they didnt, tfl merely swept that scandal under the carpet.

has anyone found to have obtained a fraudulent medical or english language certificate had their license revoked? no every time this has come to light tfl have swept it under the carpet.

any news on the driver who crashed at exhibition road causing a terrorism scare? i think there was a trial a but things went d notice quiet so who knows?

all ponzi schemes collapse and eventually uber will probably go under but it is unlikely that tfl will be the ones to bring them down. they still have enough cash to last another two or three years but i imagine they will struggle to find investors to give them more cash when their share price is down by a third since the ipo and losses are just as bad, if not worse, than ever.

they just spent $1.3 billion to generate an extra $1 billion in income. they have no path to profitability, they hoped to engage in predatory pricing to drive the competition out of business and so become a monopoly but the 'master plan' isnt working. their prospectus even said they may never make a profit. there is nothing unique about them or their technology, the language they use is the only thing unique.

hubert horan  is the only person to actually examine their economics properly, do a search and see all the articles he has written about them.

I haven't looked at their finances in detail, though remember their previous earnings report was all about how big their losses were. I agree with you on their future, its hard to see how they can survive long term without a unique product. They're probably going to sell that autonomous taxi stuff to their investors? But Google and Tesla are way ahead on that, from what very little I understand of the industry.

the car manufacturers will also go for autonomous vehicles though i feel that is further off for mass transit than most do, i hear the technology struggles with snow and fog for starters.

At the end of the day with UBER we are paying the US commission to take a taxi in the UK.  It ain't good for the economy, so if we've got a reason to stop it then stop it.  They did the same with Betfair

I refuse to take them.  I don't agree with paying the US commission to take a taxi in the UK.  It's also better for taxi drivers' mental health and therefore society if they work with fellow drivers at a local cabbie.

The local cab firm is the key for me. It is simply too easy for uber to say "we didn't know" to all sorts of violations when local firm would have been shut down and possibly prosecuted. Uber as an app working with local firms is fine, but working directly with drivers is always going to be a huge risk to the public that can't be tolerated.

the last time i checked (which was while ago) the number of mini cab firms had dropped by about a third since uber arrived, they have driven the smaller operators out of business i am afraid. tfl also have new rules about how much each firm pays for its licence and this works against small operators.

I believe a national minicab service like Uber need to verify their drivers are kosher and original not duplicates; there must be a photograph of the driver with their badge work/number attached to the bottom left-hand corner of the vehicle's windscreen, and one at the back of the driver and passenger seats for any customer to verify, if necessary. Also, the photograph of the driver accepting a fare must be available on the mobile screen of the customer post a confirmed booking and prior to pick-up.

I firmly believe there is a great deal of duplication/impersonation of Uber drivers to share costs eg the bona-fide Uber driver loaning/sharing his/her vehicle with others who may not always be safe on the road, qualified to drive or insured. I also believe the abuse of a Tfl issued Private Hire Licence is not uncommon given little knowledge of London or anywhere (unlike a local minicab) is not necessary with the advent of sat-nav.

I wonder if any Tfl officials actually do spot checks on driver's ability to drive, knowledge of the roads and ability to communicate in English. If not, it's high time a programme like Panorama takes an interest.

If Uber is so bad, what's the problem? It is just another option for those wanting to take a ride and with it being as bad as you guys make it out to be, surely it isn't a threat to the normal taxi drivers? What am I missing here? A bad service provider comes to town and everyone's p1ssed even though no one is forced to use that provider.

True. But there must be a reason people asking for these rides use it despite the dangers.

people like free stuff and its subsidies are so large it is a threat to public transportation, possibly more so than taxis. their punters tend to be cheap charlies who would have been on the buses or tubes.

the london taxi trade is heavily regulated and this lot arent. they captured the regulator too, i have seen emails from senior tfl officials who were basically coaching uber in how to circumvent the regulations.

when bozo was mayor he came under pressure from cameron and osbourne to go easy on them and he did, one of his deputies recounted receiving many phone calls on the subject. cameron's close personal friend, godmother to his son, rachel whestone was a senior employee at uber london limited and osbourne ended up with a very well paid job at blackrock who are a major share holder. no cronyism here though.

Ok all jokes aside, let's be real. There is a market for Uber. It is the people who want to save money and don't give a feck if Abdul drives the taxi or someone else. You can call these people cheap charlies or these drivers illegals, it doens't change the fact that it is still a voluntary service not imposed on anyone and if it is so bad, it should go out of business soon.

There is no legal version of trafficking people or cocaine. Imagine if trafficking was regulated. Then imagine a company that disrupts this by trafficking people and drugs illegally, with the danger that people could die in lorries or after consuming their inferior cocaine.

If people still happily used their service and inferior product instead of the better legal one, what's the problem?

Yes jolly it doesn't look good them financially but if they did manage to have 12 billion today. Just need a new story in 3 years time.
