It's worse than that; the following are not included:

Public sector pension deficit: £5 trillion (a la Grandstand, five trillion)
Owing on PFI projects: £220 billion
Housing Association debt: £70 billion

Total: £7.1 trillion
Pause Switch to Standard View UK National Debt: £1.8 trillion...

We will never pay it off...as long as we can pay the interest we are solvent

The moment we cannot pay off the interest...we are bankrupt.

has to be reduced at some point or any market downs will mean borrowing at higher rates and eventually no options left because default risk increases

Report i_agree_with_nick November 18, 2019 7:59 PM GMT
Yes. It has to be reduced; at least as a percentage of GDP.

It is currently 85% of GDP which is slightly down on the previous year or so.

An increasing debt means a downgrading of our credit rating and higher interest payments which are currently £48bn. (About 35% of the NHS budget).

Emitdeb - about a quarter is owed to the Bank of England. The rest to finanancial institutions, pension funds, banks, investment funds and private individuals.

Japan, with its population of 127,185,332, has the highest national debt in the world at 234.18% of its GDP, followed by Greece at 181.78%. Japan's national debt currently sits at ¥1,028 trillion ($9.087 trillion USD). After the stock market crashed in Japan, the government bailed out banks and insurance companies and provided them with low-interest credit. Banking institutions had to be consolidated and nationalized after a period of time and other fiscal stimulus initiatives were used to help reboot the struggling economy. Unfortunately, these actions caused Japan’s debt level to skyrocket.

China’s national debt is currently 54.44% of its GDP, a significant increase from 2014 when the national debt was at 41.54% of China’s GDP. China’s national debt is currently over ¥38 trillion (over $5 trillion USD). An International Monetary Fund report from 2015 stated that China’s debt is relatively low, and many economists have dismissed worries over the size of the debt both in its overall size and relative to China’s GDP. China currently has the world’s largest economy and the largest population of 1,415,045,928 people.

Russia’s debt ratio is one of the lowest in the world at 19.48% of its GDP. Russia is the ninth least indebted country in the world. Russia’s debt is currently at a total of over 14 billion руб ($216 billion USD). Most of Russia’s external debt is private.

Canada’s national debt is currently at 83.81% of its GDP. Canada’s national debt currently sits at about $1.2 trillion CAD ($925 billion USD). Canada experienced a gradual decrease in debt after the 1990s until 2010 when the debt began increasing again.

Germany’s debt ratio is currently at 59.81% of its GDP. Germany’s total debt is at approximately 2.291 trillion € ($2.527 trillion USD). Germany is Europe’s largest economy.

UK would be at 330% if the figures in my OP were included.  I don't know what these numbers are for other countries or if they are included in their national debt.
Report Angoose November 18, 2019 8:49 PM GMT
The latest numbers show that the UK has accrued pension liabilities of £7.6 trillion – rights that have been built up in the past but not yet paid. There are assets of around £2.7 trillion invested to cover that bill so the shortfall is c£5 trillion.

The biggest chunk of this is the State Pension which accounts for (currently) £4 trillion of the total. The other £1 trillion relates to commitments accrued in unfunded public sector pensions. This is the bill that needs to be paid to cover the shortfall from the past, which will have to be met by the workers of tomorrow.

And of course we know that those same workers also have to worry about saving for their own pension, paying off education debts and struggling to get onto the housing ladder.

Scary stuff Scared

Shocked

They could be basically debt-free if Putin and his gang didn't rob the country blind by channelling and laundering money into the UK and US.

A basket case like Britain is always going to be sinking into the mire. We gave away our industry through lack of investment and idiotic trade policies while at the same time allowing mass immigration to balloon the population way past our meager capabilities.
We import massive amounts of food that we pay for with borrowed money and if a global crisis happens that threatens either the price or availability of this imported food we will seriously exposed.

Conscription could clear the national debt. Take every Betfair premium charge payer and sign them up for 2 years, put them in an office with 10 billion to play with, and let them play any markets they like, shares, horses, futures, anything. They should be able to spin it it up to 10 trillion in a few years, then we'd have a buffer that even labour would struggle to spend.
