Most of their rent is paid (indirectly) by the taxpayer through LHA claimants. Because of tax-breaks, they put very little back into the exchequer. Unfortunately, Corbyn is not proposing the obvious remedy for the broken housing market: rent should be taxed at source as unearned income. |

Seriously what tax breaks? I think you're talking BS with that one. I looked into buy to let 2/3 years ago and I didn't think it was a good idea. It may have been in the past, but that doesn't mean it is now.
When building large housing developments, developers have to make available some homes for social housing. If there was some way of doing the same with landlords that might be an idea. I totlally agree housing is a big issue. Imo it's more important to spend money on housing than on the NHS, education or policing at the moment. But you have to be realistic. That means building them where there are jobs, and by experienced contractors. And most importantly, a zero tolerance approach to uillegal immigaration like Australia |

That's not a tax break. It's a legitimate expense that is being phased out. I agree that it should be phased out fwiw. There is also a 3% levy on stamp duty for buy to let. I also agree with that fwiw. But it's an extra tax burden, so the opposite of a tax break.

If I borrow money to buy shares I don't get tax relief to offset tax due on dividends against the interest. If I borrow money to buy a property for rent I do (although being axed). That is a quite obvious tax break.

I'd consider it a business expense myself, but I understand your point. Buying shares is not a business expense as you are not involved in the running of the company. We'll disagree on that, but I do agree that in the currenbt situation it is rightfully being phased out.

Yes, fifteen is the magic number of properties a landlord needs to register before she can call it a limited company. "Since April 2017, tax relief on mortgage interest has been gradually phased out. By April 2020, you won't be able to deduct any of your mortgage expenses from rental income to reduce your tax bill. If three landlords in Weston Super Mare own 1,000 properties (have my doubts, but let's assume they do or close to it and it is common place nationwide) I'd do something like this:
Insist that some housing is rented out at reduced rents for social housing and then give them some form of exemption from Capital Gains Tax on the sale of some of those properties to compensate. |

All that is required in the rental market is fairness and professionalism. Investors deserve a return on capital and remedies for bad tenants. Tenants deserve a secure basis to live their lives in decent conditions.

I don't believe in changing the goalposts. If you want something done, it's better achieved by working together, rather than saying fcuk you. Plenty of people had the option to become landlords. A few did, and as it happens, thanks to huge house price rises in some areas, they are very much quids in. Had the market dived, like in Japan, would they be bleating claiming a payout. No, ofc not.

That did make me chuckle, Clydebank. From the rate-tarts bailed out in '07 from their investments in Icelandic casino-banks, to the PPI claims culture, to the current campaign in the Daily Mail for compo for Woodford Fund investors, the whole idea seems to be that some of us must be too middle-class to fail. |

There's a load of new housing and regeneration round here. The local economy is booming (think it's got the highest employment growth in the country). House prices are mental here at the moment mind. Not great for youngsters

From experience on my own street, most renters care nothing about the outside of their houses, people who buy a new home do in the main. I see trouble looming the more they place them next door to each other.

Thatcher's vision was to increase home ownership and that was continued by Blair. Problem is lack of house building and a big population increase has led to a huge increase in property prices putting them out of reach of my children's generation
