Not so sure he is doing the right thing for himself here. Many leavers will not like this new deal, especially Farage and the Brexit party, (and their voters), and they will certainly bring all other opposition parties into this. If he gets the  election he wants and campaigns with this 'new' deal, he may well regret it. Discuss.

I agree HGS, very risky for the reasons you mention.

Surely even corbyn realises this is his best chance??
Report Angoose October 24, 2019 11:24 PM BST
Corbyn very much wants an election, the issue is that, like the Conservatives, his view is far from universal within the senior members of the parliamentary party.
Report HGS October 24, 2019 11:27 PM BST
He would have enough support to get this passed surely?
Report Angoose October 24, 2019 11:31 PM BST
If the EU  confirm an extension in line with the one outlined in the unsigned letter, and the WAB is pulled, I am increasingly of the opinion that Labour should agree to an election.

Be aware that Trump will be in the UK on December 2 and 3 to attend the NATO summit.
Report Angoose October 24, 2019 11:34 PM BST
Ultimately, if Corbyn chooses to take the election option, the party must support that choice.
The danger remains, however, the possibility of further tricks from Johnson.
Report Angoose October 24, 2019 11:35 PM BST
Also on the horizon is a possibility of a mass sacking of 12,000 ASDA workers on November 2.

Report Angoose October 24, 2019 11:47 PM BST
ASDA are attempting to change their terms and conditions. As you might imagine, the changes on offer are not beneficial for the staff. They have been threatened that the changes are on a take it or leave it basis, contracts will be terminated.

Report Angoose October 24, 2019 11:59 PM BST
Johnson, as is his way, being disingenuous with the election offer. Claiming that he will give additional time to debate the WAB in the full knowledge that wrecking amendments will prevent it being concluded to his satisfaction.

Rather than accept this and move directly to an election, he wants to use this reality for political gain.
Report treetop October 25, 2019 12:00 AM BST
ASDA are probably feeling the pinch from LIDL and ALDI who have made big inroads into their market share. Probably this or redundancies in the offing.
Report Angoose October 25, 2019 12:01 AM BST
I strongly suspect that the ASDA saga will be resolved, the management will make an improved offer.
The last thing they want or need is a staff shortage in the run up to Christmas.

ASDA profits increased in the last financial year, forget the exact figures but approximately 600 million after tax.
Report Angoose October 25, 2019 12:02 AM BST
In September, the firm announced an increase in profits of 9.2 per cent on the previous year, along with a total operating profit of £803m.

Arn’t ASDA one of the cheaper ‘big chains’?
I’d imagine they’d weather the storm better than the likes of Waitrose who are on the extremities.
I heard yesterday a big Tesco store in Sheffield has closed and ones that remain open are having deli counters etc reduced.

I heard a commentator say the other day a winter GE would be bad for the right wing vote as many of the bigots and selfish types are old and wouldn’t risk it going out to vote....it’s their old bones apparently don’t like cold weather much....so the younger lot will gain traction.

Boris, like the rest of the tory mob couldn’t give 2 s hits about country etc. They bribed the DUP, sacrificed the general good of the country to keep the ‘broad church’ together and harvest power at all expense and now are blackmailing parliament with threats of not showing them the deal unless they get what they want.

I don’t vote normally as it’s tacit agreement of a corrupt immoral system....but I will this time.

No, they have agreed an  extension until January. That's not the end of it, even if further extensions are granted. After a Brexit agreement, we go into a "temporary arrangement", where we try to agree a trade deal with the EU. That runs until at least Dec 2020 and will almost go on for another few years, since a trade agreement is extremely unlikely to be agreed by Dec 2020.

As for the general election, the tories would love to get an election in prior to the UK leaving the EU.
If an election followed a Brexit that will likely have a significant negative outcome for out economy, the tories may not get in power again for many years.
Many are likely to desert the tories at the next election and a coalition seems the likely outcome.
