We have got it so dangerously wrong on immigration, the reason why we had such a large industrial base was for two reasons, first we got the jump on the rest of the world with steam power and the industrial revolution, but this did not very last long the rest of the world soon caught up.
Secondly we had the empire but we no longer have the empire anymore.
Britain’s industrial base as been in decline since the mid 60s, however at more or less the same time we got the contraceptive pill, this has meant a big drop off in the birth rate. If it was not for mass immigration the population and industrial contraction would have been almost in tandem. Our population would now be less than 40 million and declining this would have meant redundancy for large parts of British cities that mushroomed in size during the last 200 years, we would have basically been able to demolish large parts of obsolete housing.
The cold hard facts are that we will never need the levels of population we now have in the UK and worse still we can’t feed everyone here we need to import greater amounts of food from abroad at the very time there is greater demand and competition  for this food .

Millions of apples have been left to rot in UK orchards as Brexit uncertainty worsens a labour shortfall, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has warned.

A shortage of pickers has forced farmers to leave tons of fruit and vegetables – the equivalent of 16 million apples – in fields and orchards, it said.

Brexit fears are fuelling a shortage of workers as more EU nationals are leaving the UK amid concerns about freedom of movement and stricter immigration checks, experts say.

A survey of growers, carried out by the NFU, found that 1,147 tons of apples have already been wasted during this year’s harvest – and the union warns the figure is likely to be higher.

“I think it is morally reprehensible that we are allowing this level of food waste,” said Ali Capper, chair of the NFU’s horticulture and potato board.

In August, the labour shortage was reported to be 17 per cent. Last month, it was 20 per cent, but experts fear the figure could be even higher this month.

Seasonal workers have been put off by the devaluation of sterling following the Brexit referendum and have left for jobs in other EU countries such as Germany, Netherlands and Denmark, the union said.

On the Brexit effect, Ms Capper said: “It has been about making people feel like they are not welcome here.

"It has been about question marks in terms of future status: ‘Can I come back next year? Will I need a passport? Can I continue to come on my work card? Will I get stopped at the border?’

@angoose not that your comment has real bearing on this post, but just so that you know the dutch use automation to pick their produce that is why in landsize they are the worlds biggest producers, in real terms only the USA grows more produce than the dutch.

Alan Johnson the Labour ex-minister, said some years ago that he's very relaxed about the UK population hitting 70 millions.
Labour actually wants a situation where standards of living plummet, simply because poor people tend to vote Labour.
So for them, a high population low wage economy with as many people claiming benefits as possible is highly desirable.

And too hell with quality of life for the masses.

There will be more vibrancy after Brexit so that's OK, except for any deluded fools who thought Brexit is about stopping immigration.

Can somebody explain to me the logic behind such reckless population growth when the world is in crisis and food security is virtually nil? What kind of problems are we leaving our kids.

High immigration is initially about importing cheap labour, which erodes living standards for the working classes.
You only have to look around, quality of life is falling because we now have too many people.

And if you're a certain type of immigrant then it's a political issue.
They need as many of their own kind here in order to get their voices heard, with the ultimate aim of taking over all together.

This is the type of asinine comment that beggars belief!

Do you really think people have have fled murder, rape, hunger, brutality are thinking I know if we get enough people to England we can take over?

That is moronic, pathetic and stupid!

Care to explain your takeover theory?

People have always grew old but here is the thing 80% of 3 million  expected increase in population is down to immigration what happens when they grow old do import another 30 million people to look after them?

Japan has managed to cope with an aging population without importing people.

This looking after the aged seems a very weak argument for allowing mass immigration to ruin your standards of living.

Going back to OP - there were 50 million in UK in 1950. Why would the population be below 40 million now?

Because of the introduction of the contraceptive pill that has dramatically reduced the birth rate

You'd hope that they'd get together with local charities and foodbanks.  Fwiw there's a residential square near me surrounded by I'd say 12-20 properties.  In the square there were two large Bramley Apple trees full of fruit rotting.

Gonna need to see some figures that support that macarony. Find it highly doubtful that that figure is correct. (Not disputing the declining birth rate, obviously.)
By:
macarony
When: 22 Oct 19 14:37
Its an assumption on my part that because the birth rate had fallen by long way, back when I was at school most families had three or more kids, my parents generation was 5/6 if not more.
Who knows how far the population would have reduced I said 40 million because I thought It was a conservative estimate, the population might have been a lot less.
70 million plus people is far too many for our capabilities and the world population expected to hit 9.7 billion by 2050 according to the UN. We are in for a rough ride expect things to get a lot worse very soon

Maybe someone smarter than either of us can come up with something more accurate than your "it's less than 40" or my "that can't be right"!
