The same curmudgeon attitude that scoffed at the invention of the wheel pervades this thread.
Any advancement (as long as it's ethical) is brilliant. We love round numbers mainly because we have 10 toes and fingers. So anything divisible by 10 becomes significant. Sub 2 minutes is astonishing. Brailsford, the king of 'incremental gains' to the fore I see. |

I,m sure someone will come along do away without pacemakers use puk,puk motor bike like in cycling to pace him and find a faster piece of synthetic track for example and beat this record, but so what

You have to giggle at comparing this to the invention of the wheel.
For a kick off the wheel was whats known as a GPT (General Purpose Technology) that effects every branch of development. This is a guy who artificially ran a little bit more quickly over a distance hardly anyone even bothers to try such is it's impracticality and pointlessness. As for the notion of round numbers signifying anything, I refer you to the OCD mentality that is a defect, not something to applaud. |

dusty, it's Sunday, give yourelf a day off ffs, lighten up you might actually enjoy it. In the 'great scheme of things' there are far more seriously iportant things to get worked up about than this.imho.

once the lazers were projected on to the road I don't really understand the roll of the pacemakers he was only a few yards behind at any one point,he could have just ran within projected lights without the pacemakers

Good point, perhaps it was having human company that helped?, anyway someone moaned that he would make a few quid selling/endorsing merchandise, has this ever happened nefore!. Even the Granny sh@gging footballer had no shame in doing likewise.

By:
I was actually thinking if the media had got it wrong and the lazers were only a guide for tv viewers and wernt actually visible to the runners

The reference to the wheel is remind us how far we've come.
To treat a WR as meaningless is to denigrate other advancements. Why are you on the internet if you don't support invention, speed and skill? The same drive that made this lad break 2 hours is no different to the drive that breaks down any barrier. |

So if someone is born with 12 fingers and 12 toes, do we celebrate that as some sort of advancement in evolution? No, society deems him a freak, tells him/her to adapt to the social norms by persuading him/her into chopping his/hers mutant fingers off |

TBB, we all hate the 'overound' but we don't have to let it pollute every waking second, do we?.

pace runners created a blocking force against the air by formation to make it easier for
record breaker, may even have created a very slight forward draught to help him technology, innit |

I would love to hear your opinion of groups of men running around a field trying to kick a ball between three sticks arranged to form an upright rectangle with a line on the ground and the tribal behaviour of their followers. |

Tbf I think any WR should be chalked off UNLESS it's blowing a hooley and there's XR protestors doing yoga all along the route.

Since the proficiency of those men affects their bank balances and my Betfair account it is an issue of some importance foxy.

Its not invention or inginuity....it's 1 man running a fraction faster under contrived conditions....for himself. Dont package this as some sort of inspiration, it's utterly useless. Foinavon Excellent logic, Dusty. I would love to hear your opinion of groups of men running around a field trying to kick a ball between three sticks arranged to form an upright rectangle with a line on the ground and the tribal behaviour of their followers. It's pretty daft, other than it being a medium to gamble on and employs a lot of people. Also it gives men across the land an avenue to escape the over baring partner. There is the added issue with football that the game shows all the ill's of capitalism, where the small man pays for those who extract far more than they merit 'at the top' where ability isn't relative to remuneration (if a top pro takes 400k a week he can not possibly be 400 times better at kicking a ball than one being paid 1000 a week) |

Just wanted to add
For all those people seeing this as inspirational, with cosy western lives of laid back consumerism and excess Look at who are now the long distance contenders: rake thin black Africans that look to have lived in deprivation. |

Oh dear me.
The Economist have done a piece on this event. It turns out firstly the sheltering of the wind by the runners is estimated to have contributed 3% advantage and negates any improvement in his time.....but there’s worse He was wearing the Nike Vapor-Fly shoes that contain carbon springs. Cough splutter whhhaaaaa? No limits haha Apparently the shoe is as controversial as the speedo swimming suits and could be banned. Looks a lot to me like an advertising campaign for Nike |
