Watched it last night. I like my comic book films to be much more cartoony than this - it is far too dark and depressing for my personal preference. That said, I can recognise quality and Joker is genuinely an excellent movie. Phoenix is superb, an Oscar-winning performance for sure.
9/10. |
By:
I appreciated Phoenix’s little homages to his predecessors, Nicholson and Ledger. It really is a tour de force performance.
By:
No intention of watching the daft moron's youtube vid, but are people actually discussing if his relationship/sex with the neighbour were real???
Holy moly. |

Watched the film last night and was very impressed. A real tour de force performance from Phoenix, whilst de Nero was his usual reliable self. The story of a mans natural instinct to want to belong, loved and accepted was at least equal to, if not better than travis bickels. The film is very dark and well shot and has an excellent soundtrack. Imo, the dancing on the steps was a homage to singing in the rain and rocky...a need to be loved and admired.
My only problem was the film could have done with an extra 30 minutes, to fully understand Arthur's decent into madness and a psychopath. A very solid 9/10 from me. Interestingly, no of the scenes from the 90 second trailer appeared in the film. Next up, Dr Sleep. |

just got back from seeing this in the cinema, good film, superb acting

Watched it today and a very good film. 7.5/10 for me. Phoenix is excellent. 15 certificate is correct as really not that violent bar maybe one scene. Crazy thing is, this could be quite realistic with the current state of mental health and lack of support for it. Sign of a good film is that hours afterwards you are still thinking about it. Well worth a watch.

awesome idea if true, using cut out stuff from the film for the trailer. wish more films would be brave enough to do this. trailers often spoil the movie |
By:
Was it not left open for a sequel? Got to be a good ten years before Bruce becomes Batman. Not saying there will or even should be but the comment above about another 30 minutes made me think.
By:
There will be a Sequel I have no doubt.
By:
according to this tale; Joker will be over 70 when Bruce becomes "Batman"
By:
The original film was cut by 30 mins.
The whole film was just set inside a mind of someone inside an asylum. Hard to tell who the joker was, the audience or the critics. Very clever film. |

In the original batman with jack Nicholson, the joker shot his parents..not in this
By:
as i said, pretentious
By:
Not remotely pretentious.
Just simply refusing to be bound by a 6/10 film made 30 years ago. The idea that this rich, influential Wayne family would walk alone along this alley remains as daft as ever but the idea that it was/wasn't him was interesting. |
By:
it's pretentious; that's assuming you know the meaning of the word?
By:
Like everything today they bare no resemblance to the originals
There's this thing called "canon" and there's nothing of the sort in these movies/TV shows Doctor Who canon law says he's a male humanoid, never been a female ever, only ever had the 12 incarnations Fast forward to potty 2019 and some throwaway line on a park bench with a character named Bill Potts and that's 50 years completely spat at Totally unwatchable the stuff they churn out nowadays |
By:
Although the Jack Nicolson film wasn't exactly canon either?
By:
By:
Yeah,so the bad guy in the movie is the "Joker" but even worse is mass media seems to be the point.
By:
The point being for me is they are pushing this "mental health" stuff so they have an excuse for killing people who go after them
Its in all their TV shows and movies, the US is propagandising their school children with shooter videos, and the shooters are "lone wolfs" with "mental health issues", funnily enough none of these "mental nuts" have gone after these filthy politicians yet? but when one man does it it'll be like the penguin jumping off the iceberg. But they want people to think its mental health issues, when in fact its really not is it, they've pilfered absolutely everything and left us high and dry, its a revenge thing and that's very human isn't it ![]() ![]() |

Our two points go hand in hand

Its a lovely scene

Back to the Joker film. As the last scene was set in the asylum, do you think the whole movie was supposed to be his imagination?
Also, was the woman he murdered at the end the same woman who was his support worker during the film? |
By:
2 different people I believe torq. The neighbour was certainly in his imagination. As for the whole film, who knows, but I would say not.

Cheers HGS.
I’ll be having a tenner on Phoenix to win a Best Actor Oscar if there’s a market. |
By:
Phoenix has been brilliant in some movies must admit
Gladiator he was massively underrated as well, I actually rooted for maximum over him and I'm usually one who supports the bad guy ![]() He played the role perfectly in gladiator, a proper bas*ard There's only one other villain that comes close to that in my opinion and that's percy whitmore from Green Mile, some characters are just nasty pieces of work. |
By:
These film writers need look no further than Percy from the Green Mile, you need to a blade wielding psycho to make a convincing villain
You need a nasty little c**t like the mentioned, they do exist in real life as well |
By:
You don't need a blade wielding psycho to make a convincing villain**
By:
If you liked this film you should check out Phoenix in 'You Were Never Really Here', it is equally as dark, plays a mentally damaged hit man, saves a young girl from a brothel, his choice of weapon is a hammer........................................................
By:
The best characters that are the villains are the one's who are mentally deranged and who have a back story, like how and where did they become this piece of work
You'll find it starts at childhood, that's where the sociopath is born |
By:
The best ones are plausible. I reckon that's what makes this film so good. He's turned it from a camp cartoon character (Ledger's Joker was great top, though I thought Leto was awful) into a real person who could have lived a peaceful life if the system served him and other people didn't push him.
Pretty impressive when a film leaves you feeling some sense of empathy with a mass murderer. |

"I’ll be having a tenner on Phoenix to win a Best Actor Oscar if there’s a market." Deserves to get an Oscar, really powerful performance, also Oscar for Best Film, Best Director. But open question if they might swerve this one with all the controversy around it, fears of possible gun violence, mental illness, too dark. Not sure if that might affect it's chances (?) Although Heath Ledger did win posthumously for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. |
By:
Heath Ledger was excellent
I also agree with the line "threaten to blow up a truck full soldiers no body panics, because its all part of the plan... but threaten one little old mayor and everyone loses their minds" |
By:
I'm going to try and see this film next week, I like the chit chatterer collective reviews but it's not a film I would see normally but I'll try and make the effort when I get a chance in Brixton or West Norwood picture houses.
By:
It’s nothing like a normal comic book film, Slippy. No superheroes as such and far too dark and depressing for my personal liking. All that said, it is an excellent movie and would deserve the awards.
I also think the controversy is justified. I could quite see some loony copycat or group of them going berserk after watching it. |
By:
heard there is far leftist propaganda in this film too
