Was another naughty attempt to confuse the already confused unfortunately a few of the scientists involved didn't want their reputations tarnished with such nonsense.

Last time I ate steak, the waitress asked ''how would you like it cooked?''

''Oh'' I said ''I like mine rare.

Just cut off its horns and wipe its arse, that'll be good enough for me.''

Never had a problem with red meat.  Processed shoite's another story altogether, imo.

What, red meat?  When I was a kid my old man always said "forty chews to every bite."  I think maybe too many people wolf it down and the gut can't break it down properly?
Report DenzilPenberthy October 1, 2019 10:08 PM BST
Risk factors such as obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol, inactivity, diabetes, lack of antioxidants, excess calories, lack of fiber intake, quality of meat consumed i.e grass fed beef compared to hormone filled grain fed beef, processed meats containing nitrites all mitigate risk factors on the whole.
Best advice despite any nonsense what we get fed in the media is avoid processed meats as much as possible,if you are to eat red meat have grass fed organic beef when possible, eat lots of fruit and veg especially berries and greens (not overcooked) and try to rectify as many of the risk factors in the first sentence as you can.

once a month only. i just know i don't feel that great if i eat red meat.
fish, dolphins, whales, rhino horn shavings. that's more my kind of thing
Report DenzilPenberthy October 1, 2019 10:14 PM BST
If you avoid meat altogether and don't eat a nutrient rich diet you are cattled so would be better off eating some meat from a nutrition point of view, but a low fat properly supplemented plant based diet with tubers, legumes, proper grains, fruit and veg is the healthiest way to live but adding grass fed beef a few times per week into that diet won't do you any harm.

Yes, I can absolutely understand the processed stuff being a problem.  Look at all the chemicals in it, ffs.  I'll have a bacon piece maybe once a fortnight and bangers maybe once a month.  That's about it really.  Beef curry / chilli's a different story Love

I wonder how many people take any notice of these new studies. Many must or they wouldn't keep spending money on them.

These reports and studies go back a hundred years. There's nothing new to discover. It's all been done.
And most of them confirm the health problems that can arise from eating meat products.

But every now and then, someone with a vested interest finds a new way of doing a study, that will come up with a more favorable result for whatever they're trying to promote.

Always look for the money behind the report.
Report Dr Crippen October 2, 2019 12:02 PM BST
The problem with studies and reports is that they're mostly conducted by people with vested interests in the results.
Then report they seek to promote gets to be headline news. While the negative report gets tucked away and forgotten.

This latest one which was done using under 10,000 people has been reported all over the media.
Yet the earlier and much larger study involving 250,000 people which flies in the face of the last one hardly got a mention.

As always, money talks.

I read today that the high phosphorous levels in red meat can leech calcium from the bones. I didn’t know that.

I eat very little meat so I’m not concerned.
Report DenzilPenberthy October 2, 2019 10:45 PM BST
Interesting MD thought it affected people with kidney issues but it's possible that the high phosphorous throws other chemicals off track which keep calcium in the bones not the blood and other tissues (would have to check).
I think Vitamin D and K2 work together to keep calcium out of the wrong places which is more of a problem if you take calcium supplements, also excess calcium from the blood ends up in the brain with fats and metals causing dementia/alzheimers also the spinal chord and of course if it's elsewhere and not in the bones osteoperosis and osteoarthritis.
Report jucel69 October 2, 2019 10:49 PM BST
You do realise nobody's getting out of here alive?!Laugh

I eat and drink whatever I want to, up to 5000 calories a day mostly!
Report Dr Crippen October 2, 2019 10:53 PM BST
Makybe, The medical opinion is that a high intake of meat protein causes bone loss.

A study measured the amount of calcium in the wee.
Then measured the calcium in the wee of people who were recently fed meat protein.
The loss of calcium had increased more than the calcium contained in the meat, suggesting that the extra calcium had been drawn from the bones.
What happens is that meat is acid forming in the body, so the kidneys use calcium to neutralise the acid which it flushes out in the wee.

As for milk being a useful source of calcium. In 8 studies they failed to prove that drinking milk increased bone strength.
And in one study of post menopausal women, the group drinking three extra glasses of skimmed milk per day, suffered more bone loss than the group used to compare them to, who were not taking extra milk.
They tend to keep quiet about these kinds of studies that go wrong, but they're there out there.
And they still tell us to dink milk for calcium.

Aye true and the nutrients are very specific to the species needs the macro nutrients vary alot.
Rats do very badly on mothers milk as it contains around 1% protein whilst rat milk is 12% protein.
Can't remember the numbers and growth times for baby cows but obviously very different to us.

It seems to me that they have just presented the stats in a different way.

Old interpretation: Eating more than x amount of red and processed meat increases cancer risk by 18 %
Reaction "Oh my god, that sounds bad, I have to cut down"

New interpretation: Eating more than x amount of red and processed meat increases cancer risk from 6% to 7 %.
Reaction "Hardly any difference I'll enjoy a bacon sandwich"

In truth, enjoy what you enjoy doing while you can. Make the most of your life.
