Are there really people about who refuse to eat meat because they think that breeding animals for food affects the climate?
I can think of one or two good reasons for not eating meat, but climate change isn't one of them. I think climate change fanatics who demonstrate about it in the UK are pretty stupid people. And refusing to eat certain things when most of the world couldn't care less, is hard proof of that. |

Keeping their mouths firmly closed would go a long way to reducing the amount of hot air around.
Would also help to offset the cows' farting ![]() |

I read a while ago that the meat industry does as nuch damage to the climate as all the motor fumes in the world, but that's obviously incorrect having read the posts on here.

My objection to eating meat would be animals are killed to allow this
I often contribute to Compassion in World Farming, which argues for a decent life and painless death for animals we consume. I do not have the will power to be vegan, animals are just too tasty for their own good, and a good source of protein. I do not see how eating meat can affect the climate. Or is it the fact it requires cooking for humans, so this uses energy. but we still cook vegatbles, who would want to eat them raw? |
|
By:
I don't eat meat because the thought of eating something alive (which like us has a Brain and central nervous system) makes me feel ill. I couldn't do it if my life depended on it.
I was in the supermarket earlier and saw someone buying a chicken for less than £3! Less than £3!! Can you imagine what goes on for a life to be profitable for pennies? Eating meat is clearly something humans will continue to do, but is it right to eat life that clearly must have suffered to become so cheap? I think it's very sad that people are happy to cause suffering just to get some protein, or whatever they say to justify it, and have no conscious as to why their food is so cheap! |

Climate change is a hoax for crying out loud
|
|
By:
agree with you 100% Allin. I don't eat meat either and think exactly the same about chickens when I peer in the freezers. Everythin's got chicken in it. Chickec curry, £1 only. **** off and stick your poor abused chicken up your arse.
|
|
By:
Some people just buy the cheapest.
We need animal protection laws to ensure chickens have a minimum standard of life. Size of cages, how many chickens to a cage, etc |
|
By:
Free range chickens would have the best life, but probably most expensive.

I read a while ago that the meat industry does as nuch damage to the climate as all the motor fumes in the world, but that's obviously incorrect having read the posts on here. No Kenny - you are correct. Meat production is the biggest cause of deforestation. |
|
By:
yes the amount of forest destroyed to produce beef is alarming.
I am not having a pop at non meat eaters, just the fuss over the planet yet they will go home and eat asparagus flown in from peru. |
|
By:
And therein lies a dilemma. As people are lifted from poverty they demand meat in their diet.
Africans mostly eat maize, bot of chicken and fish. If and when they prosper, meat production would need to increase dramatically to meet the demand. |

animals are just too tasty for their own good, and a good source of protein.
It's good the way the animal food producers keep stressing the protein content of meat. As if we can't obtain enough protein from other commonly consumed foods. This brainwashing has been so effective that the moment you tell someone you don't eat meat, the immediate comment is, then where do you get your protein? Yet the deleterious effects of too much protein are rarely mentioned. Ask anyone who suffers from Gout or Osteoporosis. High levels of protein also puts undue stress on the kidneys. Another point is that animal protein usually comes with loads of saturated fat, and we all should know how that affects the heart. In fact there's no case to be made for eating foods simply for their protein content, unless you're a bodybuilder because protein does increase growth hormones. Unfortunately you'll age faster, and protein is also great for cancer growth in this respect. |

I can buy into plenty of environmental policies - things like avoiding polluting and wrecking our natural resources, inefficient waste, the way we as consumers are encouraged just to keep replacing and re-ordering stuff (don't repair it just chuck it and buy a new one or order 10 things on free delivery, choose one and send the other 9 back).
But they've completely lost me on meat. Without wanting to point out the obvious we've been eating meat since we were in caves (we are omnivores, after all). That must be when climate change started, right ? 50,000 years ago ![]() |

GoBallistic : 'That must be when climate change started, right ? 50,000 years ago.'
Wrong! Apparently it started 'since records began'. 1884 for the Met Office and 1850 elsewhere. So considering the age of the Earth, last Thursday ![]() |

We won't have to worry about eating meat at all if Corbyn gets in.
With Labour's spending plans in full flow, taxes will be so high nobody will be able to afford to buy meat. |

More evidence that fish feel pain, following on from studies which show crustaceans feel pain too. I'm not too sure why we ever convinced ourselves that beings with a brain and central nervous system couldn't feel pain, except of course for convenience.

I've just had a wonderfully uplifting experience. I was driving home at just after 3pm and I was surprised at the lack of traffic. I came past the local school and there was no obstructive parking or careless manoeuvring blocking the road, just drove straight through. How wonderful that the kids are embracing a carbon-free future and refusing to be chauffeured around in outdated gas-guzzling technology.
Wait! I must have been dreaming, catching at pretty pink unicorns again. |

More likely that the kids were off somewhere protesting against climate change while the teachers enjoyed a long weekend

More evidence that fish feel pain,
I wonder who pays these universities to waste time and money on stuff such as this. Of course fish feel pain. Pain is natures way of making living things avoid danger. Why not do some research into things like - ''are all university academics lacking in common sense?'' And why newspapers bother publishing their ridiculous reports is another area that needs investigating. |
|
By:
Dr Crippen, I think the point is that generally people need to be told, otherwise they keep telling themselves things that are not true. You should realise this.
Conducting and publishing these studies give people a truer insight into what's going on and they will have to work harder to either change their habits or convince themselves it's not true to justify their behaviour. I find your post quite naive. |
|
By:
AllinR1,
You're hardly in a position to call anyone naive if you need an investigation to tell you that fish feel pain. Any child with modicum of common sense could have told you that. That suggests you are naive in the extreme, and with little common sense to go with it. |
|
By:
Dr Crippen, I haven't eaten meat (or fish) in decades as I am fully aware that animals feel pain.
So I'm afraid what you say and think are incorrect. The point is there are millions of people out there who believe that fish dont feel pain or have chosen to tell themselves that they don't for convenience. The point of these studies is to provide evidence so that people can better educate themselves. Something which seems to have gone above head. Given the amount of posts you have on here, it might be a good idea to think before you post. HTH |
|
By:
AllinR1,
You seem to leave a dig at the end of each post. Which leads me to believe that I might have upset you. You're not upset are you? |
|
By:
Not at all D Crippen, just surprised at your naivety, including having to explain to you the reason for such studies and the importance of evidence.
My point is that if you applied a little common sense perhaps you wouldn't need to post so much to get educated on simple matters. |
|
By:
There you go again.
So I have upset you. |
|
By:
You walked into that one AllinR1. Not very good at this are you?
|
|
By:
Nice try, I think you feel quite embarrassed that someone has had to explain to you the importance of studies and evidence and you have chosen not to try and defend what you say but are changing the nature of the conversation.
Given how prominent you are on here, that's quite disappointing. |
|
By:
Not very good at defending your opinion when challenged are you Dr Crippen?
|
|
By:
Has a pop at end of 14:55 post then accuses bloke he's conversing with of doing same.
|
|
By:
And here's Mikael D'Haguenet, now he's always upset.
|
|
By:
I didn't use any swear words. I'm in a relatively good mood.
|
|
By:
Nice one Mikael.
I hope naive little AllinR1 is taking note. |
|

Looks like Dr Crippen has abandoned his initial argument in favour of the changed subject. I wonder why.
Not very good at this debating stuff are you Doc? |
