This is inevitable, because you can't get something for nothing.

Always knew they were a death trap when I first saw one years ago on the M42. I remember saying to Mrs Wife, 'sheet, they've got rid of the hard shoulder - what happens if you have a sudden emergency? You've got nowhere to go!'

Discussing it on the radio, it seems the scheme was based and passed on a trial.
But once passed, the criteria for the trial was abandoned and they went ahead with something different, like instead of having safe places to pull up every 500 meters, they still used one and a half miles apart.

The UK motorway design of 3 lanes & hard shoulder is basically from 1960s.
We have far more cars using the roads now & cars are more reliable.

It would be safer to have a spare lane but at the cost of either congestion or the cost of building another lane.

Sooner or later will have computers driving our cars on motorway so shouldn't crash into nother vehicles (or at least not as often as human drivers do)

You have not bothered to explain your preferred Motoway solution. Instead you just act like a child and start ranting about me without offering anything constructive .
"I have you in my posset" - just grow up.

So if we decide that we shouldn't use the hard shoulder for driving- in should be left empty in case a modern car breaks down & is unable to limp the 2 miles to a safe refuge.
So what are the alternatives
1) Go back to 3 lanes & hard shoulder-  we accept there will be congestion but will be safe or charge people to use the motorway so usage drops.

2) Build another road/lane. - we decide it is worth spending money.

What is the solution if we decide humans can't be trusted to drive on a Motoway without a hard shoulder?

John.W.Henry you're becoming more pathetic and childish every passing day.

If you were half as clever as you think you are you would know that 9/11 wasn't the first time an airoplane had crashed into a New York skyscraper.

In 1945 a B-25 crashed into the Empire state building.
,
A tiny plane, compared to those on 9/11, travelling at much slower speed with a fraction of the fuel onboard crashed into a steel framed tower and it disappeared, leaving a sizable hole in the side of the building.

How could this possible happen? In your own time and in your own expert opinion.

Ok here is your bomber of 1945. Uncanny that they found wreckage of the bomber here there and everywhere isnt it ?

1945
July 28
Plane crashes into Empire State Building
A United States military plane crashes into the Empire State Building on this day in 1945, killing 14 people. The freak accident was caused by heavy fog.

The B-25 Mitchell bomber, with two pilots and one passenger aboard, was flying from New Bedford, Massachusetts, to LaGuardia Airport in New York City. As it came into the metropolitan area on that Saturday morning, the fog was particularly thick. Air-traffic controllers instructed the plane to fly to Newark Airport instead.

This new flight plan took the plane over Manhattan; the crew was specifically warned that the Empire State Building, the tallest building in the city at the time, was not visible. The bomber was flying relatively slowly and quite low, seeking better visibility, when it came upon the Chrysler Building in midtown. It swerved to avoid the building but the move sent it straight into the north side of the Empire State Building, near the 79th floor.

Upon impact, the plane’s fuel exploded, filling the interior of the building with flames all the way down to the 75th floor and sending flames out of the hole the plane had ripped open in the building’s side. One engine from the plane went straight through the building and landed in a penthouse apartment across the street. Other plane parts ended up embedded in and on top of nearby buildings. The other engine snapped an elevator cable while at least one woman was riding in the elevator car. The emergency auto brake saved the woman from crashing to the bottom, but the engine fell down the shaft and landed on top of it. Quick-thinking rescuers pulled the woman from the elevator, saving her life.

So how remarkable was this :  The Empire State Building reopened for business just two days later, and even more remarkably, it took just three months to repair all the damage.

Based on the information collated by the WTC structural  engineers the twin towers were constructed in a manner to withstand the impact of a modern day aircraft and i will enclose a link to a documentary ( https://911planeshoax.com/2013/09/11/proof-that-no-real-planes-were-used-on-911/ explaining the format from which it was built amoung many other facts and evidence which you may want to ignore

I don't expect you to watch/read/comprehend all of this it but as i bat for the truth i am always open to research anything anyone throws up that may include something i may have missed. So rather than try and be oh so clever i strongly recommend you carry out some proper research of your own b4 trying to jump on the side of the official narrative and play MR JUST MANIPULATING LIES Cry

When you play with fire YOU will get burnt unless you can ring fence your points of research to back up your belief. Cry

As a footnote i am not that clever at all but i am guided by exceptionally talented investigative journalists and researchers who i trust implicitly ( far more than the propaganda driven MSM and official narratives which are spun out against almost every major incident we are now subjected to on an almost daily basis).

Ok thats that. back over to you to defend your belief. I am content that my knowledge, although extremely difficult and time consuming to amass,  is far closer to the truth than what the history books tell us.

I do not expect to hear back from you anytime soon so i will draft up a thread just for you containing many points of research you may want to refer to IF you really want to understand the truth. Cry

Mex.. If they are going to run with these smart motorways which it looks as they will regardless of the protests then they have to ensure that they install as many emergency refuge areas (ERA) as they can to ensure drivers can get the **** out of the traffic. Do you get that ? Or are you so ******* thick that it goes way out of your level of comprehension ???

Will i be using them ? Not if i can help it unless they at the same time implement the above or we are going to be faced with a disaster just waiting to happen, HOWEVER, I COULD BE WRONG !!!!!
Report sageform • January 30, 2020 8:16 AM GMT
Very hard to avoid using them if they are on a route that you use regularly. Being retired, time is not such a priority but for instance, I have 2 sons with families. One in Whitchurch near Cardiff which is a very long journey from Wedmore, Somerset without using either the M5 or M4. My other son is in Royston so we would take the A303, M4, M25 and A1M for the shortest route. I have back problems which makes 90 minutes the longest time I can safely drive without a break so motorway services are the best solution. The nearest train for Cardiff would involve driving to Weston S. Mare, leaving a car there and changing in Bristol and again on to a local Cardiff train. Getting to Royston involves driving to Castle Cary, train to London, tube across London and a train to Royston. To get to my son's house in Bassingbourn would mean a taxi. If you live in a town centre and never visit rural areas, public transport is the answer but that is no use to me. I think that they will have to stop any new smart motorways and quickly improve safety on existing ones.

Does anyone actually object to the "smart" bit of these "smart Motoway ". The AA report is about the lack of hard shoulder. So is the ability to close lanes, reduce/ increase speed limits, monitor congestion etc. a good development.

Can't be long before these Motoways become safer by stopping humans driving. After all it is human drivers who crashed into a stationary vehicle which caused these 34 deaths. Or do we blame those deaths on the New World Order of Lizzards?

Frightening statistics, criminal even, especially if confronted with the true statistics!

Urgent action is required to rectify this situation by, at least, coning off the ex hard shoulder until a safer plan is put in place!

As a reasonable compromise, my own early thoughts are to make this lane a max speed limit of, say 30mph, but to allow "undertaking" if the second lane is moving at less than that speed!

I hope the victims' families are successful, and get compensation (if there's such a thing). The use of the hard shoulder on the motorway as a running-lane is sheer bonkers and ill-advised and ill-conceived putting the safety of users before traffic congestion/jam. It's merely to save money at he expense of the lives of motorists and their passengers.

The majority of the drivers in The UK are not competent drivers on ordinary roads, and the motorway is a lottery to some, but a necessity to shorten journey time; the signage on the gantry is few and too late esp before a turn-off/exit.
