When Bridges Collapse: The Genoa Disaster

The homes of nearly 600 people had to be destroyed after they demolished the rest of the bridge. Very sad, especially for the older people who had lived there for most of their lives. They lost their entire community.

I went to Genoa many times during my working life. From ground level it was a most impressive structure.

I caught the start of that program, missed the end.
I would HATE to have lived under that bridge, I wouldn't be able to sleep, even when it was "safe"!
The thought of something hanging over me high up in a country famous for vicious earthquakes and the mafia being involved in sub standard building contracts, no thanks!

We were emigrating to NZ in 1970 and the boat had docked in Melbourne for the day. We walked up into a park To take some photos a few of which were of a bridge being built. A while later sirens could be heard for what seemed like hours, on our way back to the boat we stood at the same spot and the bridge had gone.

No body believed the before and after photos were the right way round until we explained. Thirty odd dead iirc.

Well, there was a Silver lining with the Old couple
Certainly looks like it was Avoidable
Regarding the Hammersmith Flyover must have been over it Thousands of times ..

The problem remains of how many more Bridges are at risk
