@FOYLESWAR -- that's the thing. I'm not a dealer so would only buy things I want. Though by far the biggest factor is I've no idea where there are any car boot sales around here.

local papers in the events section  will give ya details of any near you .

Haven't done many, but clearly remember the first car boot we did as sellers.

We parked up and started to unload. About 6-8 old ladies literally swarmed on our stuff in the first 20 seconds.
Only later did we notice some nice items had completely disappeared.

(after that we just parked up, locked up and wandered around for 5 minutes)

Last summer back a mate of mine went to a boot sale in Somerset

and bought a small collection of costume jewellery. There was about

five or six bits and pieces. Cost him eight quid. Later on he spotted that

one of the chain/bracelet things had a gold hallmark(?). Had it valued and was offered

£125 for it. Put it in an auction and ended up getting just under £90. Laugh Greedy sod!

His own fault, like everyone on the forum, I despise gambling.

I buy CD's from them to resell on eBay. Bought Muppet Treasure Island 30p sold for £15 and the same with American Tale Fievel goes west. If you ever see the soundtrack for Once Upon A Time In America, you'll get £8- £10 on eBay.

More of a hobby than a business but I enjoy.

I did a car boot sale this morning in Bristol.

8.30 to 11.45 - made about £50 after paying for the pitch.

Not a fortune but it was a good laugh, and it was nearly all stuff

that I'd had at home for ages. Surprising what people will buy, mind!

Much you think the dinkys stuff worth FOYLE?
Used to buy them when young. Boxes discarded at the time and the toys given away after a few years.
Seen a few for sale in a second hand shop window and they brought back loads of memories.
Report FOYLESWAR August 29, 2019 7:57 PM BST
dont think they are worth as much as they were 5-6 years ago akabula , have bought a load of old toys from carboots mainly as you say nostalgic reasons as i had those kind of toys as a kid and didnt respect them ,i used to have a load of those lead soldiers as a nipper after a while i got bored of playing with them and took great delight in whacking them with a hammer to see if i could flatten them into a cube  with one blow .also used to have the dinky cars and lorries and used to crash them into each other as ya do . those old toy cap guns and rifles are fetching good money now , had them too but either broke them or lost them over the years .

after a bit of research that railway clock i bought that i thought was from the 1950s could actually  be from the 1920s, it was overwound but with a bit of tinkering it  is ticking  so hopefully it will keep time  .
Report FOYLESWAR August 29, 2019 8:11 PM BST
also bought a 1960s battery operated "charlie weaver bartender " made in japan in its original box ,turn it on and he shakes a cocktail as if mixing it and then drinks it and smoke comes out of his ears , cracking toy .

A few months ago I went to a suburban Sunday markets. It was close to finish time and a lot of the sellers were packing up. I was peering into a bucket of spanners and sockets when the seller came up to me and said,'Do you want them?'. I said maybe. Some of them for sure. He said,'Just take 'em. I'm sick of looking at them. You can have 'em.' I said I've got to pay you something. He just waved me away and said I don't want them.

I took them home and checked them out. Obviously a lot of them I already had. But there was a lot I didn't. A full range of deep sockets that I didn't have that I've already used heaps of times. All up there was 260 spanners and sockets. Free!!

Foyles - Re Ebay for values, you are looking in the wrong place!! You have discovered that what people are asking on Ebay is often unrealistic/inflated.

So, just put in the Ebay search section "Dinky" and "Boxed" (if relevant) and the name/make of the vehicle and/or the three digit model number on the box or base.  Then the key bit, when you have pressed enter you will get a whole list of relevant vehicles for sale with their asking prices.  NOW go to the column on the left and page down till you get to section marked "show only". Click on the "sold listings" section and it will show you only items that have actually been sold and the price they actually made. This is a reasonably reliable way to value stuff although not foolproof for the very rare and hard to find models. Remember with Dinkys condition is everything and a mint or very good original box is key to getting top dollar.

Hth.

Foyles - Re your railway clock, unfortunately it is much easier to say what the problem is not than what the problem is. The mainspring could be broken, or just seized. Either way a decent clockmaker should be able to quote you a service or repair quite easily. How big is the face?  Is it round with a drop dial (window you can see the pendulum through?). Cheers

thanks blackbarn good advice which i wouldnt have known ,i will do that , just some advice for anyone thinking of going to carboots i liken them to a treasure hunt and most who sell at carboots dont have much idea of the value of  what they are selling so some great bargains to be had ,get there early , i always take a good deal of cash with me around £500 just in case there is something out of the ordinary there ,most stuff goes for peanuts and i have never had to spend that much ,i remember once years ago a dalek for sale about 6 ft in height and the seller saying it was  an original from a dr who set from the 60s on that occasion i didnt have enough money the asking price was £100  to buy it and have regretted it since .
Report FOYLESWAR August 30, 2019 6:13 PM BST
of course i had no way of knowing if what the seller of the dalek was saying was true but it looked  the bizz and a ton would have been a snip imo

just seen your question about the clock blackbarn ,the face or dial is approx 12 inches round and the wood frame around it  mqakes the width of the clock 16 inches,no you cant see the pendulum you have to open a little hatch at the bottom of the clock and can see the workings there .its a wall clock . not very techy but will try to get one of my sons to show me how to load pics on here  and i will show some of my finds and the forums great minds can express thier views ..
