'mixed race' is more of a government form thing, rather than a word people use to describe themselves.

Plenty of mixed race people would describe themselves as black. It's up to the individual.

The notion that if you have 1 black ancestor you are black comes from the 'one drop rule'. So one drop of black blood and you were considered black even if your skin colour was white. It was brought in during the Jim Crow era. A white person in a legal dispute with another white person could win the case if he could plausibly claim his opponent had a black ancestor in his family tree. There was even a president that was rumoured to have some 'black blood' several generations back which could have ended his career if it had been proven.

Then more recently black activists adopted it. Any admirable person with a known black ancestor no matter how far back was 'claimed' as black. So Alexandre Dumas was 'a black author', even though he was white (he had a black grandmother). Harry and Meghan's kid will be considered black too by those sort of activists.

Most people are fairly clueless about ancestry, included people who are obsessed by race. They figure they are white, their grandparents were white, and so all their ancestors for millenia must have been white.

An earlier attempt to introduce the 'one drop rule' in the south of the USA in the 1850s failed because the plantation owners themselves may have ended up classified as black, because racial mixing had not been such a big deal on a classless frontier in the early 1700s where there were hardly any white women.

Probably 2 million white British people have a black slave ancestor from the 1700s.

The all time classic piece in True Romance, where Dennis Hopper is telling the mafia boss Christopher Walkern that all wops are spawned by ni##ers.
