I've been thinking for years now just how devastating it would be if people lost main powers and everyone had electric vehicles.
Still, at least with no electricity the underpowered ZX81 running the forum bot that is on a good day only capable of "Spiv Culture fails again" would have its B/W portable screen blanked... |
|
By:
For example a nuclear attack wouldn't even need to hit the ground, just a few high EM airbursts to take out all the electrics.
I'd imagine old skool cars trucks or vans could have been hardened and were relatively easily repaired, and petrol is easy to stockpile or move tankers about as needed. If everything was electric and something catastrophic happened .. game over, welcome to the middle ages. |

No doubt caused by Brexit.
Plague of locusts forecast to hit the UK for the weekend. |

No power cuts here. About 30 miles from London, incase you're curious.

Its all sorted now
Just two faulty generators ![]() ![]() Caused widespread outage, if all it takes is a faulty generator then fair enough ![]() |

We need some proper British generators, none of these Van Der Graaf Generator muck. Thank god for Brexit.

Generators dont cause a powercuts like this, Shirley they mean turbines ?
|
|

Turbans produce no electrical output

Apparently part of the reason was
1)It was a WINDY day 2)Wind power cant cope with these wild flutuactions God help us all if wind power is rolled out nationwide ![]() |

Its always a mystery to me why people even take the media seriously
Someone reports a load of cr ap to them and they pass it on as gospel "two faulty generators" and some dodgy wind turbines. I mean fack off ![]() |
|
By:
What is the point of them
They don't report anything seriously If they think that's a worthy excuse they can fack right off |
|
By:
But it high winds they shut down the wind turbines and start up the power stations ?
Must had been a problem with the ehv lines between london and wales imo. |
|
By:
Well a turbine (in this case) is a generator with a turbine design.
|
|
By:
I find it hard to believe they would be designed such that a generator fail would take down a network that has MANY generators as input?
You'd think you'd have say a drop in voltage, doesn't sound right. A failure in the transmission network is what you'd expect to cause an outage. |
|
By:
In ww2 we used to drop lengths of wire on germany, and release balloons with trailing wires to get blown across the country, hoping to short out their power cables.
Apparently worked quite well! We need some of that ingenious wires trailing from balloons spirit again. *plays patriotic music*. |

By:
And I don't mean Russia have done it either
Some computer whizz has probably tapped into it and knocked off the power |
|
By:
From what i read their was a frequency problem, ie something went really wrong with the power supply (a real dip in power output) and then the hertz protection kicked in around the country as a knock on affect. Power stations run on 50hz and if it goes outside that for a short period then the protection acts as something local is amiss even thou it could be on the whole grid.
That is why the generator excuse is a pile of crap. |
|
By:
Maybe the hamster just needed a rest, stopped going round and round on his wheel for a wee bit.
|
|
By:
AFAIK the frequency is highly specced to run at bang on 50hz but the voltage is allowed to fluctuate a fair bit.

There was this post that i read where the frequency dipped down to 30 something at around 1630, the cause must had been catastrophic and not a generator.
