thought this was a strange incident when i first heard the reports. Machete & "stabbed" officer "will make a full recovery" statement was issued very early considering he was "critically ill in hospital". Then i heard the perp was being charged with GBH & not attempted murder? It is usually the policy of the police to go with the more serious charge in the 1st instance

I'd have thought the question was how can you not be hurt from a machete attack.

So quick is the progression of stories nowadays I'm not even surprised he's gone from "critical" to "made a full recovery and is bouncing around the streets again" inside a few hours

EVERYTHING is quick today, markets drop 4% in one day, that would have taken weeks if not months to recover 40 years ago, but today its just a minor drop, its recovered back to record highs inside a day.

i have never ever heard a press report/police release say that a police officer who is laying in hospital "critically ill" is "expected to make a full recovery" within hours of the incident that put him there

It's a shame as I'd love to explore East London, in particular the Whitechapel and Shoreditch area, as I have strong familial ancestral ties there.  It's a foreign place now, though, and not in a good way.  My dad was grew up in Leyton but that was in the 1950s.  He said it was more communal then, you'd know the people living around you.  Jon Snow would be astounded by how white it was.

How exactly does a serial violent offender manage to escape an 'Attempted Murder' charge, despite being armed with a machete and delivering half a dozen violent blows to a man's head, leaving his skull exposed ?  Would the thug have been guilty of 'Attempted Murder' if he had delivered (e.g.) seven or eight blows, with the law only allowing six free goes?

This is yet another case where the composition of the London jury might possibly be revealing.
