Just over ten years ago (under a Labour government), the pound was worth even less against the Euro than it is now. Funny, I don't remember the outpouring of grief then about the horrors of a devalued pound.

Maybe, it's just people like Owen Jones who in his book three years ago ("The demonisation of the working class"), blamed the high value of the pound for the loss of manufacturing in the UK but now spends his time tweeting about the horrors of a devalued pound caused by (non) Brexit.

Correct, and this devaluation is to do with uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Once that uncertainty is resolved (whichever way), then the pound will recover.

People need to be careful commenting on markets, they don't telegraph which way they're going. If they did no one could make any money because they'd be too predictable.

Despite all the gloom about the pound, it's no lower now than it was in early 2017.
And why did it go from $1.20 in Jan 2017 up to $1.42 in April 2018, only to fall back, then start rising in the run up to the Brexit date when you'd expect it to go the other way after listening to all the predictions?
Then when May called it off and got an extension it started to fall again.

Much the same story against the Euro.
Look at the chart to see the true picture, we'd have probably got to $1.20, Brexit or no Brexit.

Pound against the Dollar after the ref. in Jan 2017 - 1.20.

That's a gain of over 8%
How could the pound rise against the Euro and the Dollar at the same time if Brexit is making the pound weaker?

I've shown many times here how Quantitative Easing devalued the Pound since it was implemented. And explained in detail, so that even a woodenhead like UB might understand.
For what else was QE implemented to do?

Yet UB stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the effect of QE on the Pound, when it's been falling since 2015.
Which shows how far he's out of his depth.

Remember when he said he hoped for the very worst outcome for the UK over leaving?

That explains a lot about UB and his anti-Brexit stance.

Report Dr Crippen • August 14, 2019 12:27 PM BST
When a country is in debt, one thing it can do is devalue its currency.
Firstly it reduces debt in real terms.
Secondly it stimulates exports.
Which is why our government started QE - usually called printing money.

That's why the pound has gone down since 2015, if QE hadn't done the trick, they'd simply do it until it did.
Report unitedbiscuits • August 14, 2019 1:07 PM BST
The value of £ any given day depends almost entirely on Brexit.

It goes up when the Brexit-headbangers are quiet.

But that never lasts long, a brexit-screamer opens his mouth and sterling falls.

The EU have been using QE too, that has been a common factor since the referendum while £ has declined 17%; making your family poorer and blowing Dr Crippen's bogus dummy out of the water.

Of course it goes up and down daily but the trend is one way.

In twenty years the £ has lost around 30% (!!!) against the "failing Euro" (that's our tabloid-speak). The euro is the world's second most important currency and when launched one pound was worth about 1.48 euro (or something like that) its now in and around 1.07.  Despite the problems with Greece

It clear its sterling that is "failing", not the euro. We should have joined it which would have strengthened both us and the euro - if we had joined there is an argument the euro would now be the world's leading reserve currency.

If Brexit has a silver lining it will be that when England re-joins the EU in about 10-15 years time it will adopt the euro - which will be handy as that will be the currency used in Scotland and N.Ireland anywayCool
Report macarony • August 14, 2019 2:40 PM BST
When the euro was worth  60p against the pound our producers and manufactures add no chance and many either went bankrupt or moved production out of the UK.
The UK is isolated in believing that an over expensive currency is good for the economy.
The rest of the world take a different view, so unless they wrong and we are right? Then a pound that we can trade with on equal terms is essential
Report Dr Crippen • August 14, 2019 3:39 PM BST
I said earlier if QE hadn't weakened the Pound then we would have implemented more QE until it did weaken sufficiently.

You can blame a weakening Pound on anything you find convenient to blame it on, but when the government sets out with very good reasons to weaken the Pound like they did with QE,
well that's good enough for me.

To propose any other reason is simply politics or failure to look at the facts.

This is just plain wrong - sideways my ar3e. Look it up yourself, least you can do.  Highest was 90, was down at 79 in 2016.

There are advantages / disadvantages for a weaker currency (but predominantly disadvantages for an open economy like UK). But don't come on here, or any forum and say sterling has performed well against the euro since its inception - because it hasn't. You lose credibility. This is not a pro- or anti- Brexit point.

In fact over the period of euro's inception the pound has taking a kicking against it historically. Its just a fact. The perception in this country thanks to our deluded press is that the euro is "failing" is laughable. The tragedy is people believe it - and it actually costs them a lot of money but they dont see it.
