Michael Buerk has claimed the obese should be allowed to die an early death in order to save the NHS money.

The 73-year-old broadcaster said people should be free to overindulge and, if they die, they should be seen as weak rather than medically ill.

‘The obese will die a decade earlier than the rest of us,’

See it as a selfless sacrifice in the fight against demographic imbalance, overpopulation and climate change.’

Obesity is not a ‘national emergency’ because it is just caused by eating too much

He also queried Public Health England’s claim that overweight and obesity-related ill health costs the Health Service £6.1billion a year.

‘Who can calculate how much an obese person would have cost if they were slim?’

The Hippocratic Oath forbids Doctors letting people die if they can save them

I get the feeling a lot of people just over eat to get attention?????

Some people may have medical problems like limited movement or have to take medication which increases weight.

The problem is not just lardy's stuffing their fat faces with takeaway!

Poor people in times of yore were generally skinny because they did not have nourishing food to eat. Now poor people are fat. The reason for this is because the food that is the cheapest and the easiest to eat for lazy people who do not prepare their food is full of fat and sugar and salt.

Here's the thang. Could food producers put heroin or cannabis in food to create addicts?  NO!

So why can they add fillers and salt and sugar and fat!

The problem is with lazy lardy's but it is also in the food production systems and food producers being allowed to get away with bad practice.

I am not in favour of people being told what to eat but I am against food producers getting away with what they do. That should be the real question!

better off chopping the head off of anyone suffering from cancer. Imagine the resources saved on the treatment and research. Will overshadow anyone spending a couple hundred bucks extra every month on food.

Where do you draw the line with this type of stupidity??

So should we treat victims of road accidents (drink drivers/speeding/drug abuse/phone users) all self inflicted

alchohol /drug abuse/diabetics /smokers/violent actions the list goes on of self inflicted illness/ailments and injuries.

The NHS seems to spend billions trying to keep old people alive. But what a moral dilemma it is.

How can it turn away a 90 year old when they need treatment?

I certainly think if everyone was slim, didn't smoke, drink and only ate healthily, the cost to the taxpayer would probably be higher long term.

Perhaps Buerk believes all those clowns on his 999 programmes with self inflicted incidences shouldn't have been helped either he's made himself look a bit of a bell end here imo.

Former newsreader Michael Buerk has suggested that obese people should be allowed to die early in order to save the NHS money.

The 73-year-old said those who are obese may be making a "selfless sacrifice" to stop the country being overpopulated if they die a decade earlier than the rest of the population.

Writing in Radio Times magazine, the veteran BBC presenter said that fat people are "weak, not ill".

He said he does not believe obesity should be classed as a disease in a bid to encourage people to seek treatment and to "reduce the stigma (of) fatness", adding that "you're fat because you eat too much".

Buerk also queried Public Health England's claim that overweight and obesity-related ill-health costs the NHS £6.1bn a year.

He said: "Who can calculate how much an obese person would have cost if they were slim?

"How much would he or she cost if, instead of keeling over with a heart attack at 52, they live to a ripe, dementia-ridden old age, requiring decades of expensive care? (In any case, VAT on takeaways, confectionery and fizzy drinks more than covers it.)"

The former I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star added that the "freedom to make bad choices is what personal autonomy, indeed democracy, is all about", and asked "who is to say longevity is the ultimate goal in life?".

He said: "Let us positively reframe the argument.

"The obese will die a decade earlier than the rest of us; see it as a selfless sacrifice in the fight against demographic imbalance, overpopulation and climate change.

"Give them the facts to make informed decisions, by all means, 'nudge' all you like, but in the end - leave couch potatoes alone.

"They're weak, not ill."

The NHS estimates that almost a third of adults in the UK are obese, and that one in five children aged 10 to 11 are obese.

Its official website states that obesity can lead to serious health conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
