Berlins was affable and cultured and spoke with only the faintest hint of a French accent. His hair had turned shock white at an early age, giving him a distinct look. In later years he cheerfully acknowledged bearing grudges, which he discussed on a Radio 4 programme in 2018.
He appeared to take great satisfaction in describing a particular one that he held against a recipe writer whose formula for chilli con carne had failed to impress a prospective lover of his. “It lasted years,” he said, adding that it lapsed when he finally conceded “that the cooking error could have been mine”.
Marcel Berlins, lawyer and journalist, was born on October 30, 1941. He died on July 31, 2019, aged 77, after suffering a brain haemorrhage
