Seems to be a bumper year here in North Uk ,evicted upwards of 10 in the last two days from my house ,perhaps the rain and winds of late have damaged nests although the industrious vespula vulgaris is usually pretty picky about nest location .August is far too early for the final stage of their cycle when the workers become idle and the queen switches to reproduction of next years crop. The devil quickly finds work for idle hands but these wasps were in no way aggitated or aggressive .Something different is going on this year. Strangely I had two days of wasp ingress followed by a day of butterlies ,Two red admirals (I think ) and a Peacock. Seen loads of butterflies/moths this year ,plenty wasps and also a bumper year for Bombus. Garden is swamped with the invasive ladybird species Harlyquin (and slugs) .All in all a good year for insects it seems ,although there were none around in April when the fruit trees burst into early flower so naff all apples/pears/plums .The Tree Bee (ginger with a white arse )appears to be gaining a big precence and these guys don’t like having there nest disturbed ,so stay well away .

Cleared out a wasp nest from my home last week.
Blocked up the hole they were using to get in with door frame sealer.
Then found the nest under the floor boards and gave them several blasts with ''Raid'' Fly and Wasp killer, which made short work of them.
All quiet now - job done.

No quarter asked and no quarter given, that's the way I operate.

Foyles - "grasshoppers seem to have made a comeback in my area (south east ) and plenty of brightly coloured moths .good news tbf as a few years back i didnt see a grasshopper for ages and i work a gardener".

Just read your post. I am in Mid-Sussex and you are right re grasshoppers. I have a small hay meadow with paths mown thru it and the sound has been if not deafening very loud. Sussex Wildlife Trust report a particularly good year for butterflies and moths. Another good year for bees too here: My orchard has really good germination this year and dumbledore (bumble) numbers are good. I am in no position to comment generally on honey bees as we have thousands - I am close to a 400 hive apiary, so 20m bees on your doorstep tends to distort the numbers.

Had loads of wasps this year.  One nest in the shed and at least two in the house.

Live and let live, I say.

Mind you I didn't say that when one stung me - but it was my stupid fault.

Have had to remove dozens of dead uns from the house, which was a bit of a nuisance.

I think there is a line in All Things Bright and Beautiful that says you shouldn't kill wasp nests.
Report Just Checking August 2, 2019 2:30 PM BST
Wasps are fine until the end of the year when they can get cranky and nasty.
It's old age that does it. The danger sign is when you see the curtains on the nest twitching and hear muttering when teenagers walk by.
Report Just Checking August 2, 2019 2:32 PM BST
(or to be more accurate, they run out of their food source as the adults feed off a sugary secretion from the larvae that now aren't there, so they get desperate and aggressive looking for sugar sources, but I like my description better).
Report The Leopard August 2, 2019 2:54 PM BST
They feed off rotting fruit so ingest alcohol and get drunk....don't they ?
Report Just Checking August 2, 2019 2:59 PM BST
They feed their young "meat" and their young secrete a sugar in return, end of year there are no young. They also feed off sugars in plants etc like bees, but there are few of them end of the summer as well.

Not sure about getting drunk, don't think they need to be pissed to get violent and "salty" which is becoming a trendy word to say.

One of the best day's fishing I've had was using wasp grub from a nest I destroyed with some powder I got from the chemist.
Chub love them, they'll jump on the hook for a wasp grub.
Report Dr Crippen August 2, 2019 3:55 PM BST
Yes you can catch a lot of things using wasp bait.
Report breadnbutter August 2, 2019 4:38 PM BST
To use them for fishing you have to have them alive ,poisoning nest is no good ,you go in at night ,position a torch away from you but shining on nest and come in from an angle ,grab the nest and horse it into a bin bag and run .A bee veil is recommended . As for the wasp lifecycle they feed on nectar but feed young black fly and aphids .Ants milk aphids for secretations and move them around to keep them producing they also have a similar cycle to wasps,I get a lot of ants around the plum tree and the wasps are constantly on hovering around the tree but exactly what they are doing is unclear .A queen over the year  produces workers then fertile males and then queens the virgin queens mate with fertile males but not from there own colony . Wasps are deffo inebrients imo ,the redundant  workers at end of year get the taste from fermenting fruit and quickly get mad for it ,hence the beer garden probs . Wasp/bee/ant lifecycle is very interesting ,have a nest of ants in a composter that look more like spiders than ants ,black ones .

Dr C ,those links are well and good but come on ,cymag ffs that had been banned for years ,who in the right mind would use that for wasps and then handle the grubs .The real fisherman don’t use poisoned or tainted bait . The pest control guys get good money for an untainted wasp nest from the real fisherman . All they links describe is how pro pest controllers used to deal with wasps ,powder the nest entrance and they carry the poison into the nest and everything gets nuked with it . Some of these poisons are central nervous disrupters and also extremely poisonous to fish . No self respecting Trutta would go near tainted dead grub . It’s just a case of ignorance ,same as using washing up liquid to catch worms ,you will get some bait but catch SFA with it . They put the nest in a bin liner ,tie it tight and suffocate the wasps but the grubs are fine ,hence the top dollar of £30 quids a nest . Trust me that’s a fact m8 .Maybe canal fish are less fussy but the old BT,s won’t touch tainted dead bait . Docking grubs are good too and very tough ,tough skinned and can hold thar breath and wriggle all day in deep cold water .Maggots are liggtweight stuff and quickly stop moving in cold water ,you need to take emm out and let emm warm up ever now and again . Anyway another 8 wasps removed and the red admirals are actually painted ladies . Coming in pairs today ,apparently they have came across from Africa on the winds .

Back in the day the pro fisherman (matchfishers) kept thar secrets close to themselfs,no internet and ignorance ,everyone knew wasp grub was deadly but few knew how to use and obtain it correctly . Bye the way I am a fly only fisher now but like to see all the old methods used and the knowledge kept going .The purists frown on bait/spinner but it has its time and place.

Last year we fly epidemic where I live you could not open a door or window without an house full of flys, this year hardly any?
I live right on the edge of town so plenty of fields and woods ideal fly country.
As for wasps they are starting to come in from the fields around this time of year, they say the best way of keeping them away is to hang a false wasp hive up in the garden wasps from other hives will not come near another wasp hive
