South Korea dog meat: The dogs saved from being eaten

The eating of dog meat is largely seasonal in South Korea.

It reaches its height in the summer months. During the three hottest days in July and August, it is traditional for a peppery dog meat soup called "bosintang" to be prepared.

But popularity for dog meat in South Korea has declined in recent years, as pet ownership rises and new generations have different attitudes to eating domestic animals.

Humane Society International is a charity that's been working together with dog farmers since 2014 to close their farms and find the farmed dogs new homes.

The charity offers a one year start-up grant to the farmers to support them in finding alternative livelihoods, whilst re-homing the dogs across the UK, Canada and the US.

We spoke people who have offered these dogs new lives in the UK.

By Kevin Kim and Lara Owen for the Victoria Derbyshire Programme.

Sounds like people are getting salty about this seasonal meat trade and peppering the farmers with abuse.

I thought it was the Chinese that were killing the dogs? Now I have to worry about South Korea too?
Report UBLE/REGY July 26, 2019 1:27 PM BST
They do not just eat dogs they torture them first, because they say it improves the taste.

This is inhumane and quite unacceptable in the modern world. Until China, Korea and other countries ban this once for all

I will still think of them as unnecessarily backward in this area.

I have signed protests and donated to causes to fighting this. It needs to STOP.

Frankie Boyle looks like a neutered overweight tomcat nowadays....must have had a breakdown when everyone got on his case.

Animals should never be tortured, but maybe we need a definitive, worldwide list of animals it is OK to farm, kill and eat and those that are not.
Report peckerdunne July 26, 2019 5:01 PM BST
There lies the problem, just eat what you like and get on with it.
Report detraveller July 26, 2019 5:30 PM BST
What really bothers me is how people in the west eat pork when it's clearly haram. I am sure those that eat it become impure. And there's no way they are entering paradise with an impure body. I even heard they electrocute the pig before slaughtering it. The Koran clearly says it's haram. The Muslim imam should come up with an announcement prohibiting pork throughout the world.
