Think of the 100s of 1000s of hours losing players have wasted trying to win a place !

The finals of the Fortnite World Cup are taking place in a stadium in New York, with the winner set to earn more prize money than Simona Halep and Novak Djokovic won as Wimbledon champions.

Forty million players attempted to qualify over 10 weeks of online competition but only 100 finalists have a shot at winning the $3m (£2.4m) prize at Flushing Meadows.

With $30m to be awarded in total, the prize pool will be the biggest given away at an e-sports event so far - until the annual DOTA 2 tournament in August.

All finalists will take home at least $50,000 and the runner-up, as well as third and fourth-placed finishers, will all become millionaires.

Fifteen-year-old player Benjy - his player name is Benjyfishy - from Sunbury is one of a handful of British gamers to make it to the finals.

Speaking at his New York hotel, he said it's the culmination of eight hours of practise every day for the last five months. If he wins, he plans to buy a house for his family. But he admits to being nervous.

Benjy : "It will be a bit different when I'm on the stage because I've never been on a huge stage like that before," he said.

"I've only ever played in my bedroom so it will be different but right now, I'm really confident because I've been training so much. For the last two weeks, I've put in about 12 hours of training every day."

Another fancied British player is 14-year-old Kyle. Known as Mongraal, he's been a pro player since he was 13.
"It's a lot more serious than people think," he said.

"It took a lot of work to qualify so it's not just playing the game for fun. I've played at least 8-10 hours a day for consecutive months to be here."

Kyle, known on Fortnite as Mongraal, is confident he will do well
More than 30 nations will be represented with 70 players coming from the US, 14 from France and 11 from the UK.

On Thursday players were given a tour of the arena where the competition will take place.
A two-tiered stage has been set up with circles of computers.

Each player will be able to compete on their exact home set up with the same mouse and keyboard or controller they are used to. Giant screens will cut between the action for the audience.

An accurate description of many a teenage boys days, not sure it helped me when I finally played for real though.

British boy becomes Fortnite millionaire in World Cup tournament

Jaden Ashman, 15, known as Wolfiez, came second in the video game’s duos competition

A British teenager has won $1.25m (£1m) by coming second in the first Fortnite World Cup in New York on Saturday.

Jaden Ashman, 15, who competes under the name Wolfiez, was placed second alongside his Dutch teammate Dave Jong, 21, in a duos round of the battle royal-style shooting game that has more than 250 million players worldwide.

His mother, Lisa Dallman, from Essex, told the BBC that she and her son “had a nightmare” arguing over his online gaming, because she wanted him to spend more time on schoolwork.

(A MUM GETS IT WRONG....WHO'D OF THOUGHT IT?)

She admitted to having thrown away an Xbox in the past but now accepted his choice to compete professionally.

A total of $30m in prize money was up for grabs, the biggest ever at an esports event.

The duos winners, Emil Bergquist Pedersen from Norway and his Austrian partner, David W, who play as Nyhrox and Aqua, took home a total of $3m prize money.

More than 100 finalists took part in the event, trimmed down from about 40 million who attempted to qualify for the tournament.

A total of six matches were played in the competition, with duos earning points based on eliminations and their placing in each round.

Ashman said he was quick to start playing Fortnite when the game was released two years ago. He practices for as much as eight hours a day.

He told the BBC that his mother initially thought he was wasting his time. “Now I’ve proved to her that I can do stuff, I’m really happy,” he said.

With regard to spending the prize money, Dallman said her son was not materialistic, and that she anticipated he would spend the prize money on a “lifetime of Uber Eats”.

The winner of the singles tournament will be announced on Sunday.

Its sad really

Just another money making spinner for them isn't it

Exactly what they want as well, disconnected from nature playing a sodding video game in a darkened room for 18 hours a day CryCrySad

I suppose its more space for us out in the nature reserves etc, I hardly see anyone in them nowadays bar a couple of old folk who walk their dogs Sad

They haven't got the money yet.....the organisers could go broke !
