I was reading that Betfair has around 80% of the exchange market.
So why is that when commission is cheaper elsewhere and what would have to happen for another exchange to become the market leader?
Do you think we will ever see a 0% commission exchange and would this be the downfall off Betfair if there was the liquidity that Betfair currently sees?

It's not really an exchange anymore is it.

It could be the liquidity...if we want our bets and lays matched we need enough liquidity..
But it does cost in commision |

I believe commission alone will not single-handedly influence the success of a Betting Exchange - liquidity is more important. One other Exchange I'd experienced of was lower in commission but liquidity was sh1t. Also, most Exchanges are owned by bookies, and layers are mainly bookie reps or wannabe bookies, I firmly believe.
However, if an Exchange is set up by punters eg a cooperative then it could work. |

Liquidity is key, thus just not enough room for multiple exchanges on the same events.
Think VHS and Betamax, they simply could not co-exist, one format had to become the winner. Possible though that you could have a rival covering niche markets. As for commission, it's the necessary price of being able to access and benefit from an exchange. I love paying commission, if I'm not paying it then that is very bad news. |

Indeed, VHS won similarly Sky over cable. I'd rather pay taxes than not too, and not use the NHS (hospital) even though I'm eligible. The Co-operate Exchange could be named the Punters Exchange just like the Credit Union for loans to the less well-off or disadvantaged.

Interesting thoughts - thanks for sharing. It seems that liquidity is key.
I think S Markets has the best setup to challenge, and from what I read and see, they put money into their markets and make more as a bookmaker than in commission. |

Betfair a lot easier to navigate too ...Betdq is a mess .

Liquidity is an absolute key (no point otherwise), another is many bookies (including high street ones) have chosen to do their rounds here too (religiously) to manage risks and maximise potential profit. As a keen but small player one Exchange is adequate unless another not only could fulfil these two key fundamentals, but offers a lower commission too.

I was playing Betfair Monopoly (Chit Chat Edition) the other day. The Gasworks had become the Chemtrail works, the Utility Companies were now G5 stations, Fleet Street had become "Mainstream Media Fake News Avenue", there was an area called "Newham" that if you land in it you are immediately stabbed and have to go "Directly to Hospital", Whitehall is now "Tommy Robinson Parade" and Mayfair was renamed to "Old Skool P0rnhub". Some minor differences but generally all the same!

Actually the dog is replaced with a cat, the top hat is replaced with a with a MAGA baseball cap, the car is replaced with a lunar module that strangely just sits in one square being filmed all the time collecting money every turn from "the sheeple".
