Since they put the price of drink up the jakies have become junkies.

Yeah, make it all legal and turn the country into a land of nonfunctional zombies.

Portugal is only slightly bigger than London in terms of population. The ethnicity makeup is also different. What worked there won't necessarily work in the UK.

With the steps Portugal has taken, you have to assume that people will indeed seek help. If you start referring to a junkie as 'person with drug issues' and expect people will be encouraged to seek help for their drug issues, then you are mistaken. I don't think many of Portugal's policies would work in London for instance.
Report themightymac • July 16, 2019 11:26 PM BST
No, but I`ll watch it now.
Report detraveller • July 16, 2019 11:32 PM BST
Lets say I am part of a gang in london, with no interest in developing a career, and i do drugs and sell them as well. Once you decriminalize drugs, why would I seek help when I know drugs are my bread n butter and selling them just became easier? The only way you can make me stop is by taking away my customers. But what if my customers are also like me and have no interest in improving their lives?
Report themightymac • July 16, 2019 11:32 PM BST
C4 News, I saw it earlier. Drug addiction is a terrible fate and of course people should be helped.

228 addicts per 1,000,000 people is not a nation of zombies leopard.
Report themightymac • July 16, 2019 11:36 PM BST
sorry, 228 deaths per million.

"Solved the Problem" - by pretending it doesn't exist?
Meanwhile in France a muslim who killed a jewish woman after beating her for hours reciting lines from a certain book may not be held responsible for it as he had been smoking weed:
https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/17/muslim-killed-jew-not-criminally-responsible-weed-10377709/
MARVELOUS stuff, what a fantastic justice system. Well if you want to kill someone in France, they seem to be preparing a get out of bastille free card.

Another country 5hit scared of upsetting the muslims, why is this ?
Report Dr Crippen • July 17, 2019 11:02 AM BST
Portugal hasn't solved anything, they've simply reduced the number of deaths from taking drugs by legalising it and thus making it much easier for addicts to get treatment, and access to other loads of other benefits I expect.
They're basing their success on the number of lives saved - but at what cost to the rest of them?

I take the Donald Trump stance here. If you want to live in a country where drug taking is legal, then go and live in one!

Sounds like a summer research trip to Portugal for the authorities Laugh

It was a masterclass in buck passing and blame gaming by the SNP yesterday, they are responsible for the Scottish Health service, policing, most laws apart from some reserved ones, implementation of said laws, education, health education, social work etc etc the list goes on but when drugs deaths are up they focus in on the **ONE thing** they can find to try and use to blame this on the UK: The fact they can't open shooting dens in Glasgow that might apparently help a % of some users in one area. Very predictable SNP Slopey Shoulder/Not Our Fault/Desperately Find Something To Pick A Fight With and Blame Westminster stuff.

Drugs policy is the responsibility of Westminster and is not devolved to any of the UK parliaments.

Report Just Checking • July 17, 2019 1:35 PM BST
The criminality is. So apparently the SNP want the heroin users to be able to shoot up in complete safety having sourced their very expensive heroin via what can fairly surely be all sorts of illegal activity in the vicinity. It's not like they are going to be business analysts come round the corner on their lunch break. Unless of course the SNP want smack legalised. Probably go down well with their supporters ..

Good one crippen, lets instead continue with the very successful war on drugs.

It's not a war on drugs though is it?
It's a go soft and treat them like victims attitude we have, instead of hitting them really hard like they do in certain countries abroad where drugs are a minor problem.

Druggies even get classed as disabled here and get extra benefits.

If it's me you are addressing, I am an English tory voter who, unlike you, knows that Drugs policy is the responsibility of Westminster.

Report Just Checking • July 17, 2019 2:08 PM BST
I wonder if the SNP have thought through any likely repercussions on Scotland and Glasgow if drugs policy were devolved and heroin etc were made legal / given out / safe to take as much as you want there under medical supervsion, and not so in the rest of the UK, with respect to "free movement of druggies", as the EU might say.

The Westminster drug policy obviously applies to all; parts of the UK so why is Scotlands problem 3 times that of Englands?
Legalising it or introducing safe dens is just a nonsense. Stiffer sentences for dealers and strip them of their gains.

I think we should legalise the softer drugs such as marijuana, cannabis, weed, etc

But not the hard drugs such as heroin or cocaine

just my own opinion

How would a "fix room" or legalising it help with ecstasy and "solve the problem"? A quick look at google news there are stories in the last month covering (teenage) deaths from that in Cornwall, Isle of Wight, Glasgow, Bournemouth, Stratford, Hamilton, Preston... and that's just a quick search.

The thing about E is it has a reputation for being "safe" when it obviously isn't. Sad to think the first deaths to it were huge news, now they barely get a little coverage, surely more coverage would be a good thing for the UK. Instead of covering BJ waving a kipper or Trumps latest Tweet offeding some SJWs.

If drugs were ever legalised the burden on the state from the glut of thieving charlatans who will be abusing them and dropping out of society would leave us cattled.
Have a drug addict/criminal/professional workshy sickness charlatan in the further family his burden alone on society is incalculable right from the benefits, free furnished flat, bills subsidized to something like 95% (which he doesn't pay anyway and takes the rest from his family when the debt piles up) stints in hospital for psychiatric testing, hospital treatment for drug and drink escapades, prison time, burden on police who basically know what he is and does so taxi him instead of arresting him (has been arrested 100s of times),suicide threats when he was told his benefit would be stopped if he didn't find work (before he got on fake psycho sickness),the wages which are paid to these social worker types who are paid basically to validate all of this behaviour the list could go on but you get the picture we don't need any more of these scumbags which our systems are superb at creating/enabling.
