So many fantastic films over the years from brilliant directors such as Fritz Lang, Wolfgang Petersen, Ernst Lubitsch, Edgar Reitz, Michael Haneke etc and of course the great Werner Herzog, who imo tops the list, so hard to pick just one, but let's have a go.
Bap - Have you been watching the remake of the wonderful Das Boot showing just now? Is it any good and worth a watch? Wolfgang Petersen`s original was an all time classic.

Can't remember the name but the one where the elderly mum collapsed as the cold war was ending. Woke up months later and her son had to pretend nothing had changed in case she had a heart attack.
Really good.

I liked the Tin Drum too. The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (Herzog) is also a favourite. Anyone know the name of the Fassbinder film where the "mature" lady falls for a Turkish immigrant - very fine I remember, and still quite a lot to say about today. What is it called?

Goodbye Lenin! is brilliant. Socialism turns out to be wonderful when it only exists as an illusion.
Die Ehe der Maria Braun (The Marriage of Maria of Maria Braun) is my favourite. Hanna Schygulla

Dave: the title Angst essen Seele auf actually translates as 'Fear eat soul up'. It's deliberately incorrect, to reflect the speaker's poor knowledge of German.
He doesn't know how to conjugate the verb aufessen (to eat up), and he doesn't know the gender of the noun die Seele (the soul), so he just uses the infinitive form of the verb and omits the definite article.
'Fear eats up the soul' would translate as 'Angst isst die Seele auf'.

its was the "eat up" bit I was intending to highlight, I noticed the auf and deduced it was a separable verb that I hadn't seen before. The "essen" insted of "isst" and lack of an article puzzled me (but most german grammar puzzles me) - your explanation clears that up.

do watch it Mac; it's my favourite film of the last couple of years. There's a Comanche actor in it called Gil Birmingham; who i personally think should play everyone from Red Cloud to Abraham Lincoln on the silver screen. His screen presence is 2nd to no one a poignant & stark film; based on a true story that holds no punches & is refreshingly honest. I love it; along with Hell & High Water & Sitcario, it's a loose trilogy, all written by an actor named Taylor Sheridan

Great shout RacingCert with Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter. Although shown on tv in episodes, Edgar Reitz's Heimat was classed as a film and won awards accordingly. Marvellous epic. The DVD makes for a great box set.

Yes, agree with Cert on Goalie/Penalty and loved Fitzcarraldo, Kaspar Hauser and Downfall. However, I'm a great fan of The American Friend with Dennis Hopper as it opened my mind to continental cinema in the late 70s.

Die Brucke (The Bridge) directed by the Austrian Bernhard Wicki, is an excellent anti-war film in the mould of All Quiet On The Western Front, which is a classic on it`s own right. The original that is, not the remake starring John Boy Walton.

Er ist wieder da (Look who`s back) is quite a comical watch. Hitler gets thrown into the now present and is troubled how Germany has turned out.
