Passed my test in 1982 and bought a Hillman Imp (remember those?) for £90. Didn't care what it was, I just wanted to drive. Suffice to say, like the OP, it seized up after a few months so I splashed out £500 for a Beige Mk III Cortina, which I loved!

Gave up on driving at 17 - had half a dozen lessons, but kept on turning around to try and lipread the instructor. He simply lost his nerve in the end.
Spent £50 on a Morris 1100 instead, and gave it to my mate Pete. That way we were both mobile and I didn't have to drive. Had a great six months as teenagers with wheels, before we ran out of money even to refuel it, never mind MOT it. Found a siding up the hill behind the science block at the University of Sussex which was filled with similar rustbuckets. Parked it there, walked away, and, as far as I know, it's still in that siding 40 years later. |

cost £150 & a wheel came off while i was driving. luckily the wobble made me break then the clunk as the wheel came off, then waved it goodbye as it bounced down the road. roomy tho. liked it so much i got a brown one next ![]() |

My first car was a Hillman Imp....Californian...fast back...lol.
Rear engine, really roared.... It was never the same when, after a boozy session, I hit some ice and smashed it into a hedge. |

Ford Escort Mk 1 1300GT, 4 door with square headlights, (a rare combo) bought in about 1978 i think J reg, £465, was what they called a Dagenham dustbin at the time. Had to park it on a hill around the corner from where i lived to jump start it in the morning, had to carry a toffee apple hammer with me to whack the starter motor every time it conked out at traffic lights. Was a right nail looking back but you love your 1st car don't you.

A yellow Fiat127 from an auction, paid £80 and it had 6 months tax. Leaving the auction I needed petrol and didn't know where the nearest petrol station was, went to wind down the window to get directions and the window just vanished(never saw it again), it was a blessing really as the heater wouldnt turn off and it was the middle of summer.
Happy days |

850 Mini, 1966... bought it off a family member for 7 (seven) quid, knocked him down from a tenner. Took me months to rebuild it, enginewise, later stuck in a Cooper S engine, 1250 cc, modified it a lot, then swapped it for an MGB... worst thing I ever did.
