Saw it last night and agree with OP.

Taron Egerton is superb as EJ as is Jamie Bell's Taupin, but Stephen Graham playing Dick James steals the show for me. Can't say I ever liked Elton John - always thought he was a bit of a c**t - and my opinion hasn't changed in that regard but by Christ did he churn out some great tunes.

got to agree with Johnny Mustang I never really liked EJ but his early stuff in his prime was superb.  I liked the Queen Film and this is as good if not better .

Read yesterday that this was more accurate than Bohemian Rhapsody. As for EJ himself I did like his tunes except the cr4p during the Taupin split. Also watched a fly-on-the-wall documentary on EJ once and agree he was a bit of c**t. Surprised he let that one air.

Was gonna go and see this yesterday til I heard it was made as a musical. Can you confirm, is there much speaking dialogue or singing all the way through?

I've noticed a couple of bad reviews recently.  I'm not much of a fan of Elton John, real name Reginald Dwight, anyway so doubt I'll see it.

Not my cup of tea at all, I always thought he was an absolute see you next tuesday and I never liked his music either so I'll pass on this but each to their own of course.

Elton John makes no apologies for the way he is. For him, sorry seems to be the hardest word.

Who plays the husband or wife Furnish?

Furnish never gets mentioned until the very end ,  his ex Manager John Reid plays his gay lover and comes across as a right evil barsteward.

Well as nearly promised, I did see it this morning with the Mrs and what a brilliant film. Rarely do I give 10/10 but this deserves it. Oscar awaits. Just go and watch.

You should never give a film a ten out of ten rating, nowhere else to go after that

The opening sequence is remarkable, sets the tone for how the story will be told.

It is, perhaps, inevitable that comparisons will be drawn between Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman.


However, the only comparison that I will make is to highlight the difference in how the music created by the subjects is used within the two films.
Bohemian Rhapsody uses the music of Queen as part of the story of the band. In contrast, Rocketman uses the music of Elton John to tell the story, and this technique works extremely well.

The opening sequence of Rocketman catches you off-guard, creating a where are they going with this? moment.

Fortunately, it all becomes clear very quickly, the early life of Reginald Dwight being used to explain the subsequent actions and behaviours of his alter ego.


We are then taken on a highly entertaining journey, one that is highly reliant on the lyrics of Bernie Taupin for its narrative.

In attempting to condense the life of such a colourful character in to just two hours, key events are inevitably rushed, the finer points of detail unable to be explored in depth.

That said, it doesn’t harm the telling of the story, enough information is provided to satisfy both those with a casual interest in the music and life of Elton John and the obsessives.


And what a story it is.

From the shy young boy with a gift for playing the piano and musical composition, it goes on to describe the self-realisation of homosexuality, the indulgent excess that success facilitates, and the subsequent realisation that indulgent excess eventually can become more of a burden than a virtue.

The timing of the release owes more to Elton John’s ongoing farewell tour than a shameless pitch for Oscar success, films released late in the year historically being more successful in influencing the Academy.

Come the time, there will be an Oscar campaign by the production team.

But, for now, simply enjoy Rocketman for what it is, a very well-made biographical tale of an extravagant character, all set to the music that he has helped create.

For those of you thinking about whether to go and see it or not, go see it.

Some films are just very well made films, regardless of subject matter..

this sounds like one of them.


Some people consider cinema an art form, although it is difficult to see some films as art.

Back in my past I remember watching films from directors like Fellini, Antonioni, Truffaut, etc

Some of these were very beautiful films,

I used to work with a good ole fella named John Elton . It was very funny , he was constantly getting the p1ss taken out of him and his name by his work mates . One particular fella , a funny lunatic from Birmingham , would every time he walked passed John , he would pretend to be speaking into his phone . You'd hear him say funny sh1t like " No , my darling boy , I can't see you tonight darling because I'm meeting Lady Di , at the palace , she wants me to sing Rocket man to her " . Now that I think about it , I don't think I've ever met a brummie who I thought was sane , and I've met a few , ha ha .

Elton John just a very straight talking  guy .  He's not a huge fan of Madonna these days 


on a different note (i'm here all week folks) why doesnt Elton speak with a gay  accent ?

Went to see Rocketman this afternoon.7/10 at best.Like most films these days started off strongly but faded in the second half and was 15mins too long.
Thought the  sex scenes with " bodyguard's" Richard Madden were unnecessary and a bit vomit inducing.Enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody far more.

Watching men kissing in a naked embrace classifies as a " sex scene" in my book

Enjoyed it but thought there was something missing.

Strangely the song I enjoyed most was ‘Breaking down the walls of heartache’.
Thought that was stunning.

Elton John never wore a devil suit during his shows.

ha ha ... i reckon he would have loved to wear it though .  I'm guessing they must have to get his consent to feature designs etc

Read a good article about this yesterday,made a fair point that films with the main character included as an advisor tend to paint the prime character in a far beter light than a genuine biopic might do. If you are taking their input they will inevitably dilute their bad points or present them more sympathetically.Bryan May could well have influenced their image to the detriment of Freddie Mercury the way that film was presented too.
