I was looking at a a thread on another forum where the talk was about MGBs. I was never a fan of the things but was reminded of something from the early seventies...
My neighbour, who was a particularly poncey tw@t, was sales manager for a BL dealership, and when we were invited for supper, was quick to brag how they called the dog Jensen because they got it on the day they brought the Jensen FF from London!
Shortly after he showed me all the brochures for the, about to be released, Morris Marina.
He must have been embarrassed to be selling them, because, in all of the derivatives it looked dire!
Very shortly after, he came home with a fantastic looking MGB GT in Purple, with a cream leather (or was it vinyl, interior?
What really impressed me was the fact that it was a V8!
I have a very good memory and the reg was WWW 5L
Of course the WWW meant nothing at that time but, out of curiosity, yesterday, I put the reg into the DVLA site where you can verify it against the vehicle to which it belongs...
Here's the punchline...it never was a V8 because the poncey tw@t had just put a badge on the grille... I wish I had known all those years ago!

I can't remember the details but I remember some story from my Dad about a guy up the road sticking extra letters on the back of HIS car to make it appear fancier, so it's probably more common than you'd think!

I mean we're all guilty of it. I used to stick cards in my bike spokes using clothes pegs, and many people thought I had a state of the art motorbike, even more surprising for a 9 year old.

I did that as well JC. I remember years ago sitting at lights with an old lada beside me with a petrol injection sticker. Don't think anyone would be impressed but himself.

I read recently, that people who put AMG letters on a non AMG car, are having them targeted!
Interestingly, mine is an AMG, but doesn't have the badge, and I won't be fitting one any time soon!

It's strange what you do when you're young to try and impress your mates, and the general public who actually don't give a damn or just think you're the tw at that you actually are. Like loud banging music with your windows wound down, that sort of thing.
These days you get what I call 'chav mobiles' old cars with very loud exhausts with the engine backfiring all over the place, upgraded tyres/suspension and that. Just looks weird.
