I'm reminded again of how meaningless the charts are nowadays."Summer 69" only hit 42 in the uk charts. "It's only love" tina turner hit 29.Yet pretty much everyone knows them. Stuff in the charts now, number 1,2,3,4,5 .. who gives a **** and few know now what they are never mind in 30 years! In 1977 Bowie's 'Heroes' peaked at #24 in the UK charts, meaning that week, there were 23 'better' songs being bought in the UKThere hasn't been 23 better songs in the entire history of pop music. The charts are lame and always will be.
Charts reflect current popularity and aren't a measure of how popular the song will remain decades down the road. I dont think such a tool exists. You can't conveniently pick a legendary song, open the charts for the year it was released in, call out all the songs above it and say oh that chart certainly didn't work. Rankings are like that most of the times.
