Personally I would stop them. Sadly there are tragedies in the world every day - leave it to sport specific events. Minutes silence for a footballer at a football match, same at rugby etc.

I agree with Hank.

Shouldn't have had one for NZ. It creates a precedent and, as in this case, resentment when a similar tragedy is ignored. It looks like a snub.

When I was a kid, a minute's silence (and it was silence, not applause) and the wearing of black armbands was a big thing.  It seems to happen all the time now and has lost its impact.

Anything else is getting football or sport involved with politics, it is too complicated.
