A 29-year-old journalist who was shot dead as she covered riots in Northern Ireland has been named as Lyra McKee.
Police have described the shooting - which happened during late-night disturbances in Londonderry - as a "terrorist act". Detectives have said the New IRA, a dissident republican group, was most likely behind the reporter's murder.
Meanwhile, Republican group Saoradh released a statement claiming a "Republican Volunteer" shot Ms McKee while attempting to "defend people" from the PSNI.
It added: "Tragically a young journalist covering the events, Lyra McKee, was killed accidentally while standing behind armed Crown Force personnel and armoured vehicles."
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said: "This murder demonstrates all too starkly that when terrorists bring violence and guns into the community, members of the public are placed in severe danger. It is abundantly clear that they do not care who they harm.
"This is a horrendous act, it is unnecessary, it is uncalled for, it's totally unjustified. "But not only is it a murder of a young woman, it is an attack again on the people of this city."
Trouble broke out on Thursday night as officers carried out a search operation aimed at disrupting dissident republicans ahead of this weekend's commemoration of Irish independence.
During the disturbances, more than 50 petrol bombs were thrown at officers - and two cars were hijacked and set on fire. A gunman fired a number of shots at police, one of which hit Ms McKee in the head.

I dont get this story at all. Were their lots of shots fired that night ? But a journalist was that close up to be shot ?
I thought reporters were well away from the troubles.

2 or 3 land rovers with a crowd of "civilians" standing behind/around them watching and taking photos etc on their phones. Up pops tw*t (who probably thinks he's a hero, brains not being first thing you'd associate with such people) with a hand gun other end of that street and fires shots (news said at least 10?) towards them, one hits her, and she dies.

Ridiculous to treat this as an act of terrorism. It was murder end of.
Sad to say but if it wasn't a journalist, the coverage would amount about 2 mins on the news channels.
