Portmanpark: I want you to think carefully. Can you remember what you intended to type?  Was it "psychologist warns Trump may have signs of dementia"? Or was it "psychologists warn Trump may have signs of dementia"? Because they mean two very different things.

Take your time. We all know how easy it is to stumble over your words.

Portmanpark, my Dad died from asbestos as well, he got mesothelioma and that reduced a big proud 6'1" 16 stone Irishman to a hollow and empty shell, he was 59 when he died .I didn't even cry when he died, I was just glad he was no longer in agony, a truly horrific evil disease that is.

Portman,I read a book about media hysteria and overreaction (Scared to Death) and asbestosis was one of the topics,my sister suffered too so I know about its impact. Apparently there are two types ,only one of which is dangerous (10% of useage) but the American legal eagles made millions by getting both types classified and compensation chasing. I would be the first to admit I don't know all the details but do have an open mind that there may be a case for its use but obviously under strict control.

If you know you've forgotten something, that's the opposite of dementia. Dementia is a complete lack of awareness that you can't remember things.

When you walk into a room for something, and get annoyed because you find you can't remember what you were looking for, that isn't a cause for alarm. But if you just settle down in the room and shut your eyes, with not a suspicion you entered it for any other purpose, then that is a symptom of dementia. But don't worry about it, because it'll be absolutely impossible for anyone to convince you of what you're suffering from.
Report treetop April 22, 2019 7:44 PM BST
That comes later screaming,my brother in law began 5 years ago and it became progressive until last year when everyone 'noticed' the problem. He would 'cheat' by recovering when caught out forgetting matters, even wanted to drive when it was dangerous, had to remove keys and hide them until my sister gave up driving out of fear. My sister even disguised the problem by answering his questions when he was tested for it two years ago, bizarre.Children visited occasionally only noticed a year ago how bad it had become. Tragic situation.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves April 23, 2019 12:36 AM BST
It is horrible to deal with, isn't it?

I was just trying to make the point that becoming confused or forgetful is definitely not, in itself, a sign of dementia. Nearly everyone notices that the brain does a kind of defrag on itself as it accumulates more and more experiences over the decades. Memories get re-ordered to make them more usable. Some get sent to lonely folders right at the back of the cupboard. Loads of more recent events just get sent straight to the recycle bin to free up space.

It's normal and it's healthy, if aggravating sometimes.

But it's not dementia. That's what happens when the operating system inside your head hits the equivalent of the perpetually spinning wheel. "Loading ..."

You simply aren't aware there's a problem with your behaviour, because nothing is being processed any longer.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves April 23, 2019 12:45 AM BST
But I do appreciate that it's very hard to look at someone like your poor bro-in-law, and be able to distinguish between forgetfulness due to a functioning brain and forgetfulness due to a non-functioning one.

I'm just concerned that too many people these days are worrying themselves unnecessarily over forgetfulness. It certainly isn't an early warning sign of anything worse than that.

smoking (tobacco plant)holds the cure for dementia ,but governments will not admit this finding because it will cost billions to approve it.
and as smoking has serious side effects outweighing the numbers of dementia sufferers .So governments play god and keep information to a minimum about the tobacco plant cures ,and decide who lives a good quality of life and who dies.nothing new i suppose.

Fair comments screaming but our Tom smoked most of his life and it didn't work for him, admittedly we are all different in some detail. Having seen this at close quarters I am really concerned how doctors diagnose it and remove driving licenses when they deny the problem to themselves as you understand. Not enough research goes into the causes,at least one retired consultant has said to me it has struck him that the rise has mirrored the NHS dishing out statins on an industrial scale and believes there are grounds for suspecting a correlation within that.
