I found the decaprio film watchable rubbish compared to the classic 1958 movie A Night To Remember starring Kenneth More.

I was about 14 when I saw it on TV.  The bit where he draws Winslet made a lasting impression on me.

I think Leonardo DiCaprio is a very good actor but this film was complete and utter bilge.

DiCaprio (I corrected the spelling Slippy Grin) is indeed a good actor but that film was sentimental claptrap.

Anyone else hear this?

Loads of different explanations as to why it sunk including cheap & poor quality rivets to the fire that was buring in the boiler area weakening the hull, no  bins in the watch never helped either.

I have an insurance policy for £10,000,000.

.... but I only get the cash if the house gets hit by an Iceberg.

Everyone I knew at school at time thought it was so good they went back to the cinema to see it 2 or 3 times, looking back the hype probably played a part in that, remember being surprised when I learned that Kate Winslet was 19 when filming began, looked more mid 20's.

Btw some people say the Titanic never sank, it was the Olympic, good ol' conspiracists.

Leadbelly wrote a song about the Titanic inspired by the rumour that Jack Johnson
had been refused passage,in fact JJ was in the US at the time.

Jack Johnson wanted to get on board,
Captain he says, “I ain’t haulin’ no coal!”
Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well! …

When he heard about that mighty shock,
Mighta seen the man turn the Eagle Rock.
Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well!

Iv'e told this before some years back but worth mentioning again, at our bowls club going back more than 25 years was a bowler with the surname Lightoller, one day I asked him about his unusual name & was he related to Charles Lightoller the second in command on the Titanic when he replied " yes he was my Uncle " I was shocked to say the least, he survived the sinking & initially emigrated to Canada.

How did the second in command survive? would have thought he's job would be to help all passengers off first?

Nice story pumphol.
@Scandi - from Wiki.

As the officer in charge of loading passengers into lifeboats on the port side, Lightoller strictly enforced the "women and children first" protocol, not allowing any male passengers to board the lifeboats unless they were needed as auxiliary seamen.[2][3] Lightoller stayed until the last, was sucked against a grate and held under water, but then was blown from the grate by a rush of warm air as a boiler exploded. He found refuge on an upturned collapsible boat with 30 others, showing his fellow survivors how to shift their weight to avoid being swamped, until their rescue at dawn.[4]

He wasnt second in command and thus could be put in charge of one of the lifeboats.

Ok second officer, don't shoot me for a slip of the tongue !

Played by Kenneth Moore in A Night To Remember
In the other film he shot a passenger then shot himeslf ! only the Americans would do that  !!

A Scot on the Titanic remarked to the barman as the boat was struck, "I know I asked for Ice in my drink but this is bloody ridiculous"!

Paddy came back from the toilet and said to Mick when he noticed the bar was empty, "Where has everyone gone?".

"Oh", said Mick, "They are away to the dance".

"What dance?", replied Paddy.

"Oh", says Mick, "When you were away to the loo, an announcement came over the tannoy, ABANDON SHIP!". Crazy

I watched something which said the Captain did exactly the wrong thing when the Iceberg appeared

He shut off engines and tried to steer round the Iceberg, he should have done one or the other only.

If he just shut off engines he would have hit the berg head on, that have been better. The front of the Titanic would have been

crushed but watertight doors MAY have stopped enough water getting in to stop her sinking until help arrived.

If he wanted to avoid the berg he should have kept on full power the turn would have been quicker, he may have got lucky

and missed the berg altogether.

Still he did not have a lot of time to make his decision. DON'T PANIC!

ps He should have done simulated Iceberg avoidance training

He won the club championship around 1990 Mac but don't remember actually playing him before he left to play at another club

Mac all I can say is that if you were a comic doing a turn on the Titanic your audience would have viewed that iceberg as a saviour as they boarded the lifeboats.

Also Lightoller replaced someone else who was going to be second Officer & he was the one who had the binoculars for the crows nest, so if Lightoller was not on the ship & replaced the original bloke's Bins may have saved the day.

Women and children first.

Quite right Uble. If a ship sinks now it must be a PC nightmare filling the lifeboats. Fittest, meanest and strongest first might be the better policy to adopt in these enlightened times. At least everyone would know where they stood.

That remembered me of the great Ty Cobb.

In the late 50s, a reporter asked him what his batting average would be if he were playing now?

Cobb replied, "probably about .310 - but remember I`m in my seventies now!".

His career record of .367 still stands to this day.

The hero of the sinking was the captain of the Carpathia who rescued the survivors, the 'villain'
was the captain of the Californian who was accused of failing to come to the Titanic's aid.It was
not until 80 years later that he was cleared.
