been very impressed with Miss Ardern on her handling of the Christchurch shootings.
Also good to see a respectful a press conference with the press being respectful and not looking for a gotcha moment.
No doubt some of you on here think she should be at home with her new born baby and not running the country.
That is called multitasking some of you guys should try it.Laugh

i see the New Zealand thread on the shootings has been taken downSurprised

The level of education is not comparable among the public in West and elsewhere. Among the politicians, the level of control and influence is not comparable. You cannot expect them to eact in the same way, especially when there are also differences in culture, religion and generally accepted behavior.

Anyway, after finding out that NZ has a very lax gun system where once you get a license (v easy to get) you can basically build an arsenal to match the warsaw pact in 1982, yet australia has tight gun laws .. it maybe explains why he moved there to do what he did. Not sure if that's been discussed in the media but it seems a plausible reason (barring any other explanation) why he went that distance to do it.

detraveller I imagine most of the muslim and religious leaders were either born in the UK or spent most of their life here.  Plenty are doctors and significant portions are well educated.  They might generally not be so media savvy and there are cultural differences, but it's definitely not too much to expect a reasonable level of public condemnation and sympathy for the victims.

Alternatively, it might not be a lack of education and media savvy, more that such a huge proportion of muslims are supportive of Sharia Law, and that the disdain for non islamists is so strong and so entrenched in Islamic society in general, and that many muslims are so fearful of reprisals if they show public sympathy towards non islamic victims.

I am sick to death of the deification of her now that Justin Trudeau has lost a bit of his 'right-on' lustre.

The classic establishment reaction to terrorist incidents is either to ignore them (I'm not into 'whatboutery' but merely draw your attention to the estimated 6,000 Christians killed in North Nigeria by the Fulan in the last 3 months) or the (metaphorical) singing of 'Imagine' and lighting candles, talking about solidarity then pack up and go home until the next nutter (from whatever end of political spectrum) decides that their evil goals are best achieved by slaughtering innocents.

Citizens have to abide by the official government response to atrocities as they occur within their own countries. They are managed and choreographed by the prominent services and the media and if opinions do not fall into line they are not allowed to be publicly expressed.

We're never allowed to talk about terror, debate it, confront it. Where our supine political class seeks to shush concern about the ideology of terror, and to cultivate a passive response to violence, no one encourages us to be concerned. and calls for open, robust and, yes, difficult debate.

P.S Her wearing of the Niquab isn't 'cultural appropriation' on this occasion but a sign of respect - oh how easily the 'rules' are changed when it's 'you' writing the story!

Go back 2 months and head a bit north, and a pile of christians were slaughtered in a church in the phillipines. How much coverage did that get? How many world leaders pontificated at length?
