Assuming you mean the piece at either end.  My Gran used to call this the scrag end - just like neck of lamb. The rest of the outside is simply crust and absolutely must always be eaten by one's grandchildren. for which toasting, buttering and a dippy egg is the main aid.
Report brassneck March 14, 2019 10:46 PM GMT
yes blackbarn, everyone loves it,i am surprised that some bread company have not got a packet of scrag ends,i bet it would be a best seller.i looked up the offical name but the jury are still out on the real name,a lot of people have different names for it.Shocked

Heels are only the ends, the rest of it is the crust.
Some people don't like the heels, I like them, not so much for a sandwich but toasted with cheese like a mini pizza.
Report akabula March 15, 2019 1:15 AM GMT
Always known the ends as doorstops. Love them toasted but also love them with a plate of homemade soup.

that would be the heal or the healie …….
Report Angoose March 15, 2019 6:55 PM GMT
Really good idea to sell healie only loaves, and you could also sell zero healie loaves for those who dislike them.
Alternatively, in these times of austerity, you could go the whole hog and sell bread by the slice.

Taking it one step further, you could sell bread by the slice, you could even put butter on it.
The more affluent in society may opt to buy two such slices.

The filthy rich may even request some form of filling between the bread.

Maybe we could take the idea on to Dragon's Den, just need to come up with a product name.

Interesting that "heel love" clearly isn't hereditary, my parents being confirmed heelophobes.

Interesting point also that where Mac lives, it would be called outsiderphobia, shortened for obvious reasons to xenophobia, and you'd lose your job if you expressed doorstop hatred.

Crust and I never eat it .
Report peckerdunne March 15, 2019 9:22 PM GMT
Hang on lads.....

The Doorstep refers to the size of a sandwich.

The crust is the outside piece of a slice.

The heel is the last piece after slicing.

However all of the above is usually associated with bread that comes sliced..ie The Pan

Now you can buy a sliced loaf but i think the question refers to the Whole uncut Loaf.

Which i would describe as the crusty end.

The Crusty End.

I once had a very interesting weekend on holiday with Meatloaf, the singer.
We had a drinking session, I drunkenly told him about my love of loaf ends, he revealed the shocking revelation that he's actually a vampire, but as he liked me and to keep my silence, he'd give my some loaf extremities he'd brought, come the morning. We staggered into the B&B with the munchies, and while I slept, he polished them off .. then in nosferaten shame, transformed himself and flew out the window, leaving me a note to read in the morning. Indeed, like a bat out of heel he was gone when the morning had come.
