pa lapsy you are right , I have just come home from the pub after watching Liverpool v Munich and of course I agree with you but you know I don’t want to agree with you because you know I like to disagree with you : ) But life is often a series of dissapointments and you are right, but this is different If Britain doesn’t leave the EU then I will despise it , and always will

Actually it is the remainers on all sides that are guilty of that pa lapsy. Ignoring the will of the people (latest OPs say the vast majority in favour of leaving with No Deal if the only other options are staying or delaying) Hopefully it will remain civil and we don't take the irish approach.

@northanlite I think this new brand of the ira have been going longer than Brexit. I would also think they are about the only group in Ireland, North and South, who would welcome such a development.

I think anxious you raised this before and I condemned them then and still do. It's a pretty pathetic approach from you btw given that currently it is only the new ira we are talking about here and their recent postal bombs attack. Unlike you I have no love or sympathy for any terrorist groups.

As I'm Irish, born in Belfast, and almost my entire family are also Irish, I probably know a little more about the IRA than Anxious.

Akabula 11.02 "hopefully it will remain civil and we don't take the Irish approach"
Or heavens forbid the British army approach of gunning down and murdering innocent people who were having a peaceful protest.

No pl it was not a peaceful protest , it was a protest that included armed members of the provisional and official IRA Who fired shots , so this was not a peaceful protest , you can’t expect to go on a protest with members of the IRA and expect yourself to be free from the blame of what the IRA did . And they murdered innocent men women and children . Now you can dress it up any way you like Those are the facts

I'm assuming that many amongst the British Left are still unwavering fans of the IRA, as in times past?
There are even some in the Shadow Cabinet I gather.

Obviously the Savaill inquiry isn't in your ladybird book of the troubles lfc.
1 scapegoat,no justice for the families of the innocents who were shot in the back.

I'm assuming Soldier F is the one who shot one lad through the leg whilst other people were cowering round a corner. On hearing the lad's screams, one brave soul waved a white hankie round the corner and edged round to try to help him. Soldier F knelt down, took aim, shot him once, spinning him round and then shot him through the back of the head, blowing parts of his head and face on to a wall five feet away. He then calmly stood up and walked away.
Is this the same soldier we're talking about?

Civil rights,LFC,as the blacks were discriminated at around the same time so were the Catholics in the North of Ireland, simply for being Catholic. A graphic account Porcupine, after the lies and the cover ups from the British establishment in the Widgery inquiry, the Saville inquiry acknowledged not a single person who was shot was a "threat".

If there is s case to answer then it can and should be investigated , but it must be in context I recall the terrible incident when two british soldiers drove into a republican area during an Ira funeral Trying to escape their car was blocked by a peaceful black taxi and surrounded by the peaceful members of the public The soldiers were armed one lifted his gun but didn’t fire The peaceful mob pulled them from the car and murdered them , remember that ?

I must admit I've changed my mind on this several times and have passed opinions with pa before.
In NI the rules of engagement were given on the Yellow Card carried and rehearsed by all squaddies. These cards were revised several times but I think this is the relevant one: http://mikeb302000.blogspot.com/2011/12/rules-of-engagement.html for 1972 (pretty sure mine was different in 1974, 75 and part of 76).
The cards were generally disliked by squaddies because it was thought you had to be in too much danger before you could open fire. You can, however, see the purpose of them.
The first rule says that only the Commander should give the order to open fire when soldiers were acting in a group as the paras were. So the first question is who was the local Commander and did he say open fire? Did the soldier go rogue as this a possibility.
Don't forget that this wasn't a peaceful protest - bricks, bottles, petrol bombs aren't peaceful. Questions remain over whether there were guns present in the protesters which is not the same as with those people killed.
Some of the questions to be answered are: Were warnings given? Were soldiers' lives in danger? Were firearms definitely identified and about to be used? These decisions had to be made on the spur of the moment under duress.
I don't think the situation as it was can be recreated in a court of law. I'd find the soldier not guilty unless there is more evidence which we don't know about.
Something somewhere went wrong and I do believe innocent people were killed.

It was not the British Government who discriminated against the Catholics it was The Norther Irish Government.
Tis was put right in time, but it took time.
Our soldiers job was to keep the Catholics and Protestants apart while discrimination was removed.
The IRA joined in because they wanted a United Ireland.
There was lots of car bombs going off - this was the IRA. There were vigilante tit for tat killings between the Protestants and
Catholics. The British soldiers had to deal with rampaging Catholic mobs who hurled hate, bricks and petrol bombs at out soldiers.
IRA snipers waited in the wings to pick off British Soldiers.
It was a success, order was restored, anti catholic discrimination was removed, the IRA were defeated.
We are now dealing with any remaining injustices. As long as justice is done that is all there is to it.

Charles, i couldn't agree with all you have said, but i thank you for you're fair and honest assessment which you have put forward without bias.

pecker There were no winners at the time. It was a strange situation with the Catholics originally welcoming the Army as their saviours and then finding they weren't really on their side. But then the IRA went all nasty.
I really hope it doesn't kick off again.

Innocent people don’t go on ira marches ,besides the Irish sided with the Germans Twice (and they call Protestants huns ) they had no right to ire after the attacks against the planters who legitimately purchased lands (biggest seller was a catholic) they twist everything and will betray and backstab at every chance ,potatoe famine is a prime example of how twisted they are .Like what did the Catholic Church do for them ? That church is a stain on humanity . Anyway hopefully we can find a way to keep the scum terrorists from murdering innocents ,I think the oirish call it peace .

A phuckin beaut ^, i thought long and hard about the "phuckin" but the rare time it is justified.

I would hazard a guess that most mp's in parliament think Northern Ireland is more trouble than it's worth and would like to cut loose but wouldn't publicly admit so.

Yes Uble,i don't dispute that. Even a cursory glance at wiki's history of the troubles gives a timeline of it,the whole shambles was never the ira but loyalists trying to hold onto what they had at the expense of Catholics who generally had the single vote whereas 30 votes wasn't uncommon for protestants. The part in your statement in that "discrimination was being removed" is very much debatable,ie why and should there ever have been any?
Most English people i ever spoke to couldn't care less about the North, actually they would be better off in the pocket,

Discrimination was NOT removed Ublle, it was heightened and increased.
The IRA had about two guns and five volunteers until Bloody Sunday.
Not one dead Catholic had a weapon.
What more do you need to know, no weapons..
There may or may not have been one sniper but that is not proven.
The Paras did not come under fire.
After all we don't have the troubles now is a very childish thing to say.
I suppose the many dead and injured over 30 years is not even a significant.
Context is important, not childish dismissal.

Feb 6 1971 First soldier killed by the IRA Richard Curtis
Tues 9 Feb 1971 Five men 2 BBC engineers and construction workers Killed by the IRA in a land mine attack
15th Feb British soldier died 7 days after being mortally wounded in an IRA attack
Now these are the first few days of 1971 A year before pl and peckerdunne claim the IRA barely existed and had no guns
These were the very people that the marchers on that day were in league with and marched with The IRA were there on that march , McGuiness was there and armed along with others , at least one of those shot by the British army was a member of the IRA, How many bombs or murders he would have gone on to committ ? We don’t know

Of course it is significance, but it finished in the 90's.
The IRA withdrew, they were not needed anymore, because the Catholics demands for non discrimination had been met.
Thatcher also got the co operation of the South in dealing with the IRA. So they eventually gave up their military struggle.
I would that done and dusted
