The BBC are using quite a few presenters with disabilities these days.

I don't know whether they're trying to shock us or what they're up to there.

^I'll ask you the same question - do disabled people shock you?
Report northanlite • March 5, 2019 11:20 AM GMT
a very evasive response. i would think that similar to most people my answer would be:-
not generally, although a very severe disability i have never come across before may do.
i doubt anyone would be presenting tv progs with any disability severe enough to "shock" tho
Report Dr Crippen • March 5, 2019 11:31 AM GMT
It was a clumsy question, which is why I threw it back.

The sight of seeing someone disabled will spark a whole range of emotions in people, from a feeling of sympathy in some to significant distress in others.
Is that what the programme makers set out to do?

I think it's a very ill judged policy myself.

ch 4 has a talk over person with a lisp.. very hard to understand to me.. is that a sensible idea ?

If its merit no problem - if its positive discrimination, its offensive. There is definitley an issue with the BBC. "I have a dream......" If society could just stop talking about the differences between people and discriminate only on the qualities, attitudes and behaviour of individuals or groups of individuals, then we would be truly in the age of enlightenment. As long as every story has an agenda and every media outlet pushes that agenda ad nauseum,  we'll just carry on giving oxygen to bigotry - if only the likes of the BBC could see that and wake up.  And yes - a continuity announcer with a speech impediment is ridiculous beyond words, for all that in all probability he may be a really nice bloke.

No one challenging the failed MP Baroness Warsi pushing her 'Islamaphobia' agenda. Just giving her airtime to parrot her accusations that its rife in the Conservative party, without anyone mentioning that Islamaphobia is an absurd neologism used to smear the opponents of clerical fascism.

Very wise words. The left/SJW/BBC love identity politics, it's become a religion. Segregate people into various right on divisions then treat them all specially. It's quite obvious this encourages and cements for eternity societal division and is the very opposite of ignoring divisions and trying to create a prejudice free meritocracy. The thing is NONE of them seem to get this. If they had the sense to see this the wouldn't be SJW lefties so it's a vicious circle.

And if you complain about the endless political correctness, the splitting people up into groups then channeling these groups into meeting diversity box ticking quotas, you then get accused of being racist by the same clueless lefties. Just look at PorcineAndSJW on the other thread about Nish Kumar. I, and I'm sure most people, have no problem with asian or black or women or any "minority" group getting on the BBC or comedy shows. More power to their elbow. What people object to is what I'm about above. People who aren't very good getting airtime etc to meet the current fanatical and obsessive diversity political agenda of the BBC. But pointing this out inevitably is met with a whiney SJW chorus of "racist" or "sexist" etc.

Re disabled people as presenters, I've no problem if they can do the job properly. C4 however is now the SJW channel, they can't be taken seriously.

The Ex Marine who was disabled and flying around Britain in a specially adapted plane was a great series. At no point in that did you think this was a crap box ticking exercise done for the sake of it (which is when it's a problem), it was just a very good program.

I agree with just about all of that, except your insistence on calling it a "left" thing.
It's discrimination pure and simple - Positive discrimination is still discrimination and as such divisive. The BBC is about the worst culprit.

But it is NOTHING to do with Left or Right, nor any form of party politics.
A load of media studies students and other recent 2.2's from ex-polytechnics are using the group think ideologies widely discussed over halves of real ale, and are using them to suck up to the many women who aren't necessarily in their jobs on merit, by perpetuating this nonsense.

But it isn't a political thing. Much as you so desperately want it to be.

Report steerforth • March 5, 2019 11:37 PM GMT
Above posts about Tony Giles and  Arthur Williams (who is an especially natural and likeable presenter) illustrate my earlier point exactly. Neither could come close to being described as tokens of positive discrimination, - they're just good at what they do and the fact that they are disabled is not a factor. When you ignore it, it ceases to have any relevance. I'm not sayng you're not aware of it, but the awareness is not a distraction and comes with no questions about why they're there. Maybe the BBC would argue that that is the end game, but we'd get there so much more quickly if they, and others would just stop forcing it.
