Labour deputy leader Tom Watson on Thursday signalled the potential for radical intervention by a future government into the public's gambling habits – and the possibility of stake limits being applied to horseracing and sports bets.
Labour would introduce stake limits on online gambling products "if the evidence demands it," Watson said in a speech introducing the party's new policy on the issue. While limits were spoken of more in the context of those which will apply to FOBTs from April 1 and how that might translate to online equivalents, they could be applied to horseracing and sports betting should that be deemed appropriate.

If the rate at which bets could be made was capped to an unreasonable value (say a bet ever 2 minutes or something) then it would wipe out the market making bots, and in play betting in one stroke. I totally understand why the mighr want to stop an addict putting 20,000 into an online roulette game, but I have ZERO faith in any intelligence or understanding from Corbyn Labour as to how sports or exchange betting works. I doubt they'd care anyway. It's implict in left wing politicians to believe they know best and the state should be controlling people...

I want to be able to bet on anything. The other day for example I bet I could hold on after my fibre heavy dinner until I got home to use my own toilet.
When you lose these bets you do learn though, and suddenly nobody sits beside you on the train, so it's not all bad. |

The "number of bets over a period of time", very much relates to the work that was done and the lobbying of MPs (all parties) in relation to how FOBTs work. It took 12 hours for JC's first mention of Corbyn. Still (at the risk of being 'aggressive') you did get a "Venezuela" and a "synagogue" with his name all in one sentence. The "removal of betting tax" was not to get people to bet on everything, Ebul. It was to replace the very unfair tax on turnover and had been lobbied for by bookmakers, for many years. It wasn't removed at all, just shifted to bookmaker's profit at 15% - instead of 6.75% of turnover which the tax on bets was supposed to cover. There were several gambling acts passed. The 1960 one allowed betting shops. in 1991 TV's were allowed in them and in 1995 they were made more open, the worst move imo was the 2005 act which created the Gambling commission. So as far as blaming Labour for yet more of our issues. They were only in power for the last of these and that was down to Blair's government. The whole story, tax and rules for gambling and betting are not remotely party political. But, as always, you'd never know it from looking at this forum. |

Quite right Denzil, it almost certainly (again, as I said yesterday) a promise to attempt to regulate online casinos, mostly in the light and experience learned from FOBTs. The suggestion that it will affect ALL bets is gradually growing in 2 threads and some poor journalism.
