Very sad with all the other job losses,I believe you(UK) could have had brexit and with a smidgeon of common sense safe guarded a lot of them jobs, instead your internal politics have dragged your country down fecklessly. Shame on your politicians, just over a month to go and ye are still torn asunder, the people are being failed badly.

Japan and the EU have just signed a trade deal a one better than the EU are offering the UK. Honda will now just make civics in Japan lets not forget their only reason for making cars in the UK was gain free access to the EU. They will just use Brexit as an excuse

This factory makes the Honda Civic. The Civic in the Chinese market outsold the European market 5 to 1. I guess that is the market they will be investing in.

Tariff-free access to the EU was not the only reason. It also saves on shipping costs. Now Japan has just signed for tariff-free access.
But here is the reason for closure: because of Brexit, we will (probably) lose access to Europe.

May has placed us in an unprepared and uncertain position to encourage this kind of decision shirley. It will strengthen her chance of tying us to the EU.

Let’s put it this way to make it simple for you Eboue , if it was you that was employed in that Japanese car plant and the Japanese factory was to close down and move back to Tokyo and you lost your job and a Japanese person was employed in your place , in that Japanese car factory Why should it concern me again ?

Lol at the remoaner jumping on this before any announcement has been made and calling others morons.
So lets look at this logically. They apparently won't be ramping down production until at least 2021. If they waited a month or so any uncertainty they have could go and there may be no issues at all with continuing to trade with the EU. So why rush any announcement then on such a long lead time to being enacted on such a substantial issue if it may well remain situation normal? This implies Brexit may not be the issue. They are NOT moving to create a plant WITHIN the UK. BUT, as mentioned above, Japan now has a free trade deal with the EU so now it's not relevant at all to them if they remain in the EU or not, remaining in the EU is irrelevant as they can consolidate production back at home. Which will no doubt have efficiency benefits and gives them the benefit of being closer to the huge chinese market.
But remoaners desperately want to blame Brexit, where for at least two very solid reasons above, that doesn't make sense. And they have the cheek to call others morons.
I

I know you think Mrs May is the bees knees but unless some rabbit comes out of the hat soon(whch i doubt),it couldn't have been played worse.(phantom ferries, trade deals bye bye,Novembers agreement, politicians ducking and diving with only themselves as an interest.)

It would be enlightening to have an article in the news analysing how many jobs are being lost in the car industry due to the regulatory changes coming from Brussels.

@ Saddo, you explained what was happening in where you lived to me and it shocked me,i understand what you are saying,a worst case scenario though is things are going to get a lot worse if a bad recession occurs, i hope i'm way out. Ireland is following that path with the 2040 plan and a few years behind only.

BBC, as you'd expect, using it for their customary Brexit bashing.

The BBC are there to report on important stories, such as 3500 British workers losing their jobs. They've told their viewers about it, written stories about it on their website.
How the hell is that Brexit bashing?
They are literally reporting what's happening. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it any less relevant.
The paranoid minds of the brexiteers - nothing is their fault, it's the blasted BBC's biased reporting.
You couldn't make it up.

You obviously didn't just watch the extended bit of opinionated Brexit bashing by one of the BBCs brexit bashers in chief. Sometimes it's better to just shut your mouth instead of showing ignorance.

Yes, you cannot comprehend or follow simple English. Your attempt above to say I am blaming the BBC is either an attempt at a very clumsy strawman or that, and I believe it to be the former, given your posting history.

Companies are leaving in their droves, our manufacturing industry will be destroyed, nations all over the world are laughing at us.
Oh and Brexiteers like Jacob Rees Mogg are moving their assets to Ireland, to enjoy the benefits of EU membership.
If you were stupid enough to vote for something that will cripple our economy and can't see what a monumental mess you've caused, then I really can't help you.
Maybe go to an evening class and learn economics, or buy a copy of trade deals for dummies. You should learn something.

I honestly have no problem with people who voted for Brexit to reduce immigration. Fair play for being honest.
What I do have a problem with are the special type of idiots who claim we will be better off economically outside the EU. It's laughable, and the people saying it should never be allowed out in public unaccompanied, for their own safety.

There is no weak link for the Japanese , now unless you learn that little lesson then we will continue to become poorer and less secure Which is what has been happening for the working and middle classes in Britain and Europe over the last few decades , increasingly so So stop the crocodile tears , that’s what has been happening and that’s why Brexit happened

Been a car fan all my life mostley a British car fan so you know how painfull that has been over the last 40 plus years. I have said this before not just on this forum but on many others in all my life of watching the global car industry I cannot think of a worse time to be in the car industry the problems they face in my opionion arw insermountable, every thing from everomental pressure to customer apathy, change in tech and traction to greater automation and AI. I have said this before but few if any of the current car companies will be in the car business in 10 years time, they are geared up to sell cars by the million but if future predictions are even a frationly correct then the world wide market for cars will contract. Any contraction will spell doom for at least one or two car companies. I loved what Honda has done engineering wise but their good days are now behind them sadly I think they will be one of the first to fail, they will continue in some form or other but they are not the company they were.

We are turning a corner and change is upon us things that word today wont work tomorrow. Up until now trading between each other was the only way to succeed but not with AI and the level of automated tech that is here even now, this way belongs to yesterday. We need and are capable of becoming selfficent. A difficult concept to grasp right now but the only one with a sustainable future imo

The usual morons will be along shortly with their ‘this is nothing to do with Brexit’ nonsense.I guess this would include Honda's most senior executive in Europe? He has confirmed this is NOT a Brexit related issue. .https://order-order.com/201

Otoh in Japan, it is seen as a Brexit-related issue even while quoting Honda's denial.
The plan had been to start producing new Civic models at the U.K. factory from the early 2020s. But as the prospects of a no-deal Brexit grew, Britain's viability as an export base became less certain. By closing the factory, Honda aims to improve earnings in its European operations.
A no-deal divorce from the market would instantly impose a 10% tariff on cars traded between the U.K. and the Continent, and customs clearance processes would once again become necessary, throwing intricate supply chains into disarray. For ultimate production efficiency, auto plants in the U.K. now store enough parts for just hours of production. More than a thousand trucks a day cross the Dover Strait.
Honda will maintain its European headquarters, Honda Motor Europe, in the U.K. after Brexit. While denying that Brexit is a factor in the latest decision, Hachigo acknowledged that it is creating uncertainty for the company's U.K. production. "The biggest risk is a disruption in parts supply," he said.

Worries have driven Nissan Motor to scrap plans for producing a mainstay sport utility vehicle's next model at a British facility, while Toyota Motor is considering a temporary halt to factory work in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Toyota ships roughly 90% of vehicles produced in the U.K. to Europe, while the figure is roughly 60% for Nissan, according to LMC Automotive.
BMW is considering shifting a portion of output at an Oxford plant to the Netherlands, and media reports say Ford Motor is weighing ending engine production in the U.K.
Other international companies, including Japanese electronics makers Panasonic and Sony, plan to relocate certain British operations to the European mainland.

Most people don't know the big picture. The demand for new cars in US and western countries has been kept going for many years by extending loan periods low interest rates and car sales firms borrowing to keep afloat on tiny margins. There is massive over production. Nearly all car production in the UK will cease in the next couple of years imo.

Another plant to close this time in Brazil Ford trucks, Ford to stop selling trucks in South America. Seems to me that at a very high level the auto industry and world governments are planning for a very different style of transportation for the future. The piston engine is dead no attempt seems to being made to use alternative cleener fuels. Another thing to consider is how will the taxation on today's fuel be collected in the future? Expect a big increase else where

Do I get any points for pointing out that the Ghent address is purely a storage plant no production, whilst the aaist plant is as IT points out purely parts which will undoubtedly be under threat but since it’s been there since the early sixties & was hondas first unit outside Japan it may hold a little sentimental value.if Honda were moving car assembly to the eu then I would hold my hands up,but they’re not so accept it’s not a brexit issue
