Even as a seven year old, I must have had a huge amount of respect for him because I remember being very upset after the car crash that ended his career in 1972.
RIP.

That save he made from pele was just unbelievable.wonder why none of the big clubs of the day ever signed him.am I right in thinking he never won a domestic trophy.

Cheers nick I stand corrected.even though there was less to win in those days 2 league cups is scant reward for such a world class keeper.was he at Leicester when Peter Shllton was coming through?

Just heard Harry Rednapp recalling Gordon bringing him down for a penalty in the semi final against West Ham. Geoff Hurst steps up and Gordon saved it. RIP

A very sad day. What a hero. THAT save will never be bettered. Still brings me out in goose pimples every time I see it. Thanks for the wonderful memories, Gordon.

Read somewhere today that whenever England played he used to get the medal out as a lucky charm,so if that’s true he must have held on to it.i think he carved himself quite a lucrative career in after dinner speaking so probably didn’t need the money,it’s a crying shame though that some of the World Cup winners were reduced to selling their medals

One report says he sold it to help his three children buy their first homes. Hard to criticise that imo. Probably giving the collector who bought it nearly as much pleasure as he got from it. As an icon it will never disappear and be back on the market at some time in the future.

The greatest most iconic save plus David Coleman's brilliant commentary - "GORDON BANKS …..... PICK THAT OUT OF THE NET" - which, ironically, Pele didn't.
