An amazing goalkeeper and a gentleman.

Even as a seven year old, I must have had a huge amount of respect for him because I remember being very upset after the car crash that ended his career in 1972.

RIP. Sad

That save he made from pele was just unbelievable.wonder why none of the big clubs of the day ever signed him.am I right in thinking he never won a domestic trophy.

He won two League Cups with Stoke and Leicester respectively.

Not respectively - one with each.

He was the best in world of his time; a gentleman and respected enormously too. RIP Banks!

Remember when he lost his eye in a car crash in Derby which of course ended his 1st class career.Wonderful goalie and orator...Gordon you will never be forgotten.

Cheers nick I stand corrected.even though there was less to win in those days 2 league cups is scant reward for such a world class keeper.was he at Leicester when Peter Shllton was coming through?

The other point of discussion, of course ,should also be why he was overlooked for a knighthood.

Just heard Harry Rednapp recalling Gordon bringing him down for a penalty in the semi final against West Ham. Geoff Hurst steps up and Gordon saved it. RIP

Twizzle - I think the car crash where he lost his eye was in Stoke; Trentham I think.

RIP Gordon. England's best.
Would have made a second final in 1970 if he hadn't been poisoned.

A very sad day. What a hero. THAT save will never be bettered. Still brings me out in goose pimples every time I see it. Thanks for the wonderful memories, Gordon.

piece in the papers last year about which players had and hadn't sold their medal, anyone no if banksy sold his, come to think of it,it might have been in papers because he,d sold his to help his kids/grandkids

Read somewhere today that whenever England played he used to get the medal out as a lucky charm,so if that’s true he must have held on to it.i think he carved himself quite a lucrative career in after dinner speaking so probably didn’t need the money,it’s a crying shame though that some of the World Cup winners were reduced to selling their medals

Think I read he sold his medal for £125k.

Each to his own in that regard.  Think I'd probably sell mine rather than worry about it's security.

One report says he sold it to help his three children buy their first homes.  Hard to criticise that imo.  Probably giving the collector who bought it nearly as much pleasure as he got from it. As an icon it will never disappear and be back on the market at some time in the future.

THAT save was AWESOME. Can't imagine it ever being bettered. The biggest stage against the world's best player.

RIP.

The greatest most iconic save plus David Coleman's brilliant commentary - "GORDON BANKS …..... PICK THAT OUT OF THE NET" - which, ironically, Pele didn't.
