He has a valid point if we look at the harsh realities of pain and death and then  we don’t know what might happen after we die that’s the frightening thing maybe he will end up in hell with millions of others

Life being about suffering is core to Budhism and I'm sure very much part of the philosophy and culture over there.
It's not all bad. He should get a kitten.

Life is what one makes of it; conqueror or manager of ill-health and/or ill-fortune. And death is part and parcel of life - it's inevitable.
