Maybe I'm an odd one but I never liked this film. Read the book and it stuck with me but always felt the film was a bit "made for tv".

Free Fire's on Film 4 later and is supposed to be a belter.

Last Survivors before it is good so far, tbh that film doesn't interest me.

Good Movie well worth a watch.
Report themightymac January 27, 2019 9:50 PM GMT
Far fetched rubbish imo.
Report Baphornet January 27, 2019 9:51 PM GMT

There is always Jaws 3 on I.T.V 4 at 10.00

Son of Saul was excellent but this one is just unbelievable. Could never have happened. The Russian film Sobibor just released last year is a fantastic film. So was the old version Escape from Sobibor.

On a more serious note, Claude Lanzmann's epic film Shoah is the greatest documentary made on the very sad subject.

And the BBC has to go and try and link normal Germans standing up to Markels migrant madness to a return of the nazis. BBC can't turn it off.

Fair point Mac in regards to the film being seemingly "mock" and lacking realism, still the message of no prejudice with children is loud and clear, worth a watch imo if not seen.
Report themightymac January 27, 2019 11:22 PM GMT
Yes Pa, I know what John Boyne was getting at but I think he could have made it a more realistic story line to get the point over. His scenario could never have happened. The best fiction, imo, is one that is close to possible reality.

fiction is what it is; fiction. Unless it is real

I don't suppose John Dillinger could have escaped custody with a wooden gun; but he did!

Woody Allen escaped with a gun made of soap Laugh

Don't dispute anything you say Mac and in comparison to last nights film it is simplified and dumbed down, i personally won't be too scathing, the twist at the end makes it a film but agree with your point of being too unlikely to have ever could have happened.

For all the channels on the telly you have repeats and rubbish generally, probably best of whats on imo.

Two good foreign War films to watch, if you haven't seen them are:

Robert Guediguain's - The Army Of Crime.

Bernhard Wicki's - Die Brucke - The Bridge.

Sound Mac, i'll note them, pure philistine with films and getting a bit educated on here.

This film was based on a novel. It was a story of what COULD have happened in the midst of REAL events. Haunting. I couldn't watch it a second time having seen it at the cinema when it came out. I thought it was excellent.

Cabaret wasn't real, but it showed real events around its story.

First one is about the French resistance and can get on Amazon for a couple of quid.

Second is similar mould to All Quiet On The Western Front, depicting younger generation's enthusiasm for War, until faced with the grim realities. 1950s German film, not to get mixed up with other similar titles. It's a bit dearer about six quid.

Cheers Pa!

Pile of Dung .... I much prefer ..The Counterfeiters Wink
Report themightymac January 28, 2019 12:21 AM GMT
The Counterfeiters was brilliant. As was the more humorous version Private Schultz.

Missed first 15 mins of Free Fire.....joined where the guys in the transit drive into warehouse......guns exchange and shooting begins.....stuck with it for 20 mins , checked IMDB.....6.3 rating....read some reviews.....a lot negative.....the build up to the start of shooting was a bit 6th Form film school..... directing and acting....didn't feel right.....the shooting was annoying and kept going on and on.....gave up before I lost my sanity....(recorded may finish later) director Ben Wheatley

A very good film on soon this evening, "The Flowers Of War" .Channel 117, London Live @ 22.00.
7.6 on imdb, I scored it a bit higher than that.

"In 1937 China, during the second Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John (Christian Bale) arrives at a Catholic church in Nanjing to prepare a priest for burial. Upon arrival he finds himself the lone adult among a group of convent girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel. When he finds himself in the unwanted position of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese army, he discovers the meaning of sacrifice and honour."
