Not seen it but I hear its a seriously good film

sorry I just couldn't  - I have watched so many docs and films  it turns my stomach

the failure of social democracy and lack of fight against the nazis post 1918 was frightening and is my major point of reference in

political theory and action  - if that makes sense.

I've not got around to seeing this before but it's now on record to watch at a later date. Thanks for the heads up Baphornet.
Report sixtwosix January 26, 2019 5:12 PM GMT
Not an easy watch as you can imagine.

It is filed in an unusual way , the camera focusing on Saul and what is in shot close to him.
Report Baphornet January 26, 2019 5:16 PM GMT
you're welcome, Slippy Blue. Sometimes a film comes along that you just can't miss; this is one of those such films

I take it it's subtitles? Nothing wrong with that but often I'm listening/half watching and doing something else (like making bad jokes here).
I'm a multitasker, channelling my inner woman. Subtitles require my full attention.
Report Baphornet January 26, 2019 5:33 PM GMT
it's unique, JC. Watch it when you have time to

I'll tape it or watch it tonight. Nice to see a small country like Hungary make good films in their original languages that get respected round the world.

We'll always have and The Full Monty though, can't take that away from us.

Not in widescreen? Surely that's a BBC screw up, surely a film made this recently must've been widescreen?
Report HGS January 26, 2019 9:15 PM GMT
Was filmed that way on purpose. 4:3 ratio on tv
Report mouse muldoon January 26, 2019 9:22 PM GMT
Should of done it on super 8
Report Just Checking January 26, 2019 9:27 PM GMT
Yea I'm surprised. Shot in what is basically 4:3 on 35mm with a 40mm lens. Now I've read that I'm watching for any non 40mm lens shots :)

(40mm on 35mm is "slightly" wide angle).

Thanks for putting that up Baphornet, good but harrowing film,to be honest i'm not sure i got it entirely.

*****SPOILER***
Was a bit confusing, at end I thought the boy at the door was the ghost of the boy, but it wasn't, he was a "peasant boy" and did he lead the Germans there?
Report pa lapsy January 27, 2019 2:29 PM GMT
I don't think he led the Germans to them, wrong place wrong time maybe?, the phrase "you are forsaking the living for the dead" was apt and obvious, except for Saul.

For what I presume was a fairly low budget, no CGI, in a foreign language, one lens, it was a very good film, well filmed acted and directed.

Later on last night there was a sci fi film called "Area 51", I like sci fi normally, but as soon as I realised it was one of these awful "found footage" films (think Blair Witch/Cloverfield) after about 2 minutes I'd had enough of the fake camcorder crap and switched off. Unwatchable, the novelty of filming things badly to pretend it was filmed by the actors wore off years ago, it can only work the first few times.
Report Baphornet January 27, 2019 3:50 PM GMT
if you've watched "No Country for Old Men" you may have had the same feeling? Just the director playing with your emotions and letting you decide. It was maybe telling that the boy at the end had blonde/light hair? typical of the Aryan race & the opposite of the rest of the dark & dismal things around Saul?
Report Baphornet January 27, 2019 3:52 PM GMT
pleased you liked it, JC
Report acey deucy January 27, 2019 4:03 PM GMT
I watched it a while ago and I thought it was brilliant and very moving.
Report Baphornet January 27, 2019 4:06 PM GMT
my feelings acey. I like films that make me think & tingle with my emotions. Besides the escapism we all need sometimes
Report Just Checking January 27, 2019 4:14 PM GMT
I'm not sure escapism to a horrifying death camp depicting one of the lowest ebbs of humanity is what people really need! :P
