Alex Salmond, the former first minister of Scotland, has been arrested by police and will appear in court on Thursday afternoon, according to early reports.

Salmond has been under investigation by Police Scotland following a confidential investigation by the Scottish government into allegations by two women that he sexually harassed them several years ago. The Scottish government sent their final report to police in August last year.

DINBURGH (Reuters) - Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has been arrested, a source told Reuters on Thursday.

"We can confirm a 64-year-old man has been arrested and charged and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal. Proceedings are now live under the contempt of court act," said Police Scotland when asked about the reports.

A source confirmed to Reuters that the man was Salmond, 64.
The police did not name the man or detail what offences he ha
s been accused of committing. Scotland's Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Office also said it could not comment on the reports.

Three calls to Salmond's spokesman yielded no response. Salmond's lawyer was not available by phone and an email sent to him got no immediate response.

Sky News said Salmond was due to appear in court later on Thursday.

Salmond led the devolved Scottish government for seven years until 2014, and is credited with helping to push support for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom to record levels during the 2014 referendum campaign.

Oddly  I am  currently reading John Grisham  again - Rouge Lawyer.  About defending the indefensible.      It's a novel I know but he was a lawyer, as well as a novelist,   and one on side of Justice.  Well worth a read.

I think nellie is referring to the fact that Salmond is employed by the Kremlin to present the Alex Salmond show on Russia Today. He had his collar felt by Ofcom after the first show, for reading out tweets and emails from supposedly random members of the public, most of whom turned out to be either his mates or people working on the show.

Since then he seems to have mostly kept his head down, and simply got on with banking the cheques from Putin. I don't know whether allegations of historical sex offences would be  an issue to his employer. They don't seem to have harmed Putin's relationship with Julian Assange.
